Laser induced thermotherapy

Laser-induced thermotherapy (LITT) In 1983, S.G. Bown applied this technique for the first time as minimally invasive percutaneous ablation therapy. By means of quartz fibres, Nd YAG laser light (1,064 nm) is conducted directly into the tumour via a probe. The laser light is converted into heat, thus causing a coagulation necrosis of the tumour. Necroses of up to 4(-5) cm in diameter may result. Probe application is carried out by MR-guiding this technique is also used for monitoring success. The procedure is considered to be both safe and efficacious. (45, 129) (s. p. 800)... [Pg.785]

The optical properties of liver tissue and liver metastases were examined by NIR in a paper by Germer et al. [115]. Since laser-induced thermotherapy is becoming popular, the team wanted to describe the light scattering effects of both types of tissue. [Pg.159]

Although percutaneous tumor ablation has been used in the treatment of various organs, the liver has proven to be an ideal target for this interventional treatment technique. Simultaneously, three different techniques were developed worldwide, namely cryotherapy, laser-induced thermotherapy (LITT), and radiofrequency ablation (RF). The liver plays a central role in human metabolism and so represents one of the organ systems most often affected, especially by tumorous diseases. In principle the liver can be affected by both primary malignant tumors such as hepatocellular carcinoma and, more frequently, by secondary manifestations such as liver metastases. A large number of primary tumors often cause liver metastases as well as bone, lung, and brain metas-... [Pg.153]
