Large businesses

When all the budgets have been prepared they will be consolidated by the finance department for submission to the approving authority. In large businesses there will be several levels at which authorization will be made before the final total plan for the business and its component divisions is agreed. 

All of the schemes were open to non-managers. Management or business experience was needed for the adult schemes, but it was made dear this did not have to be within BT or a large business. Non-managers made up 60 per cent of the mentors, but nearly ail of these were in Roots Wings. 

Ehminating chemicals of concern often starts as a reactive strategy but it is an important first step on the path to implementing greener chemical inventories. A typical large business system has human users and a back-end database. Integration of disparate systems involves a lot of infrastructure support communication, coordinating distributed transactions, load distribution, and shared resource management. The costs of developing infrastructure components of high quality would dominate a typical large business project compared with that of the actual business logic involved. 

Table 9.4 shows the uses of styrene. These are dominated by polymer chemistry and involve polystyrene and its copolymers. We will study these in detail later, but the primaiy uses of polystyrene are in various molded articles such as toys, bottles, and jars, and foam for insulation and cushioning. Styrene manufacture is a large business. With a production of 11.4 billion lb and a price of 30C/lb styrene has a commercial value of approximately 3.4 billion. 

The four characteristics of the "new regulation" we have just described combine to produce a major change in the strategic environment facing the typical large business firm today. How this happens, and what it means for the firm is the topic to which we now turn.

The second situation is when the end product and the intermediate chemicals used in synthesizing the end product are new chemicals. In this case each substance requires its own PMN, but all of the PMNs can be submitted together to enable the EPA to achieve economies of scale and get a better idea of the risks posed by the manufacturing process as a whole. The PMNs for the intermediates are referred to as intermediate PMNs. Reduced fees are available only for large businesses. 

If PMNs cover one or more intermediates and the end product, small businesses must pay 8100 for each substance. Large businesses must pay 82500 for the end product and SIOOO for each intermediate.

A change or turnover in the senior leadership of a business makes it very difficult to establish a lean culture because there is no ongoing constancy of purpose for the business culture. Some large businesses make it a developmental practice to continually and frequently change leaders. That practice may benefit the individuals personally and provide for leadership succession, but it is a detriment to lean-centered improvement because the level of passion for lean varies based on the leader s understanding. Yet, every leader understands his or her responsibility when it comes to safety. By using lean tools to drive safety improvement, as will be presented in the body of this book, one can demonstrate to leadership the power of lean.
