Other workers have examined the use of insects to consume troublesome weeds. Again there are problems associated with the selection of an insect that is specific to the weed and has no other disadvantages such as the sensitivity of some people. Such systems are unlikely to become widely used in agriculture but do find small niche markets, especially with the home gardener. Workers in South Africa have evaluated several insects for the control of the invasive weed Lantana camara and the aquatic fern Salvinia molesta with encouraging results.9 The grass carp has also been recommended for control of a number of submerged aquatic weeds.

In the essential oils from Hedychium flavum and Lantana camara (+)-terpinen-4-ol was the dominant enantiomer of not a high enantiomeric purity, either. 

One of the most widespread examples of phenylethanoid glycosides is verbascoside, also called acteoside, which has been obtained form sources belonging to different plant families. This compound, isolated from Lantana camara (Verbenaceae), was characterised as an inhibitor of rat brain PKC, with an IC50 value of 25 iM. This effect was abolished by adding ATP, which indicated a competitive interaction with the nucleotide. The inhibition was non-competitive with respect to the phosphate acceptor, histones type IIIS in this case, but other kinases, such as PTK from a lymphoma cell line or PKA, were not inhibited. In order to translate the biochemical effect to a related cellular event, the ability of verbascoside to reduce the proliferation of the lymphocytic mouse leukaemia L-1210 cells was examined. This compound showed an IC50 value of 13 pM [32]. 

Lantabetulic acid, from the Common Pink taxon of Lantana camara, is 3/3,25-epoxy-3a-hydroxylup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid (90). Other new lupanes include glochidol (91), from Glochidion eviocarpum, and lup-20(29)-en-3 S,27-diol, from Lithocarpus cornea. 

A careful study of several taxa of Lantana camara has resulted in the isolation of 22/S-hydroxy-3-oxo-olean-12-en-28-oic acid (101), 22/8-dimethylacryloyloxy-3/3-hydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (102), 24-hydroxy-3-oxo-olean-12-en-28-oic acid (103), and a mixture of the dimethylacrylate (104) and angelate (105) of 22(3-hydroxylantanolic acid. Other workers have also obtained (104) from L. camara and have called it lantanilic acid. A possible alternative structure for lantanolic acid (106) with the potential ketone at C-2 has been excluded on chemical grounds by converting it into the acetal of oleanonic acid methyl ester. 

Lantana camara Linn, [bukhwebeletane, lantana] (Verbenaceae) leaf infusion is used for coughs and also against malaria, where it reduces the fever. The leaf contains anthranoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, saponins and steroids (14,15). A glycoside of pentacyclic triterpenoid oleanenoic acid isolated from the plant has molluscicidal property (56). The essential oil from its flowers and leaves contain mainly sesquiterpenes (57).
