Nalidixic acid can cause metabolic acidosis in infants (735). This has also been seen in older children and adults with renal insufficiency and can result from disturbed lactate metabolism. Extreme overdosage can cause metabolic acidosis in subjects with normal renal function (734,736). [Pg.623]

The ANLSH challenged the classic view [2, 3]. It postulates compartmentaliza-tion of brain lactate metabolism between neurons and astrocytes the activity-induced uptake of glucose takes place predominantly in astrocytes, which metabolize glucose anaerobically. Lactate produced from anaerobic glycolysis in astrocytes is then released from astrocytes and provides the primary metabolic fuel for neurons. The increased lactate in the neurons is converted to pyruvate via lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), which enters the TCA cycle, and increases ATP production in the neurons via oxidative phosphorylation (Fig. 8.1). This view is highly discussed, pro [4, 5]) and contra [1, 6]. [Pg.234]

Addition of oxygen to cells metabolizing glucose under anaerobic conditions leads to (a) a decrease in the rate of glucose consumption and (b) cessation of lactate accumulation. The latter phenomenon is known as the Pasteur effect. Explain why these changes occur in glucose and lactate metabolism. [Pg.418]

ALCOHOL METFORMIN Enhanced effect of metformin and t risk of lactic acidosis. May cause a clisulfirain-like interaction Alcohol is known to potentiate the effect of metformin on lactate metabolism. It inhibits glucose production and release from many sources including the liver The onset of lactic acidosis is often subtle with symptoms of malaise, myalgia, respiratory distress and t non-specific abdominal distress. There may be hypothermia and resistant bradyarrhythmias... [Pg.715]

Liver. - The detailed mapping of glucose and lactate metabolism along the radius of the hepatic lobule has been investigated in situ in rat livers perfused with 1.5 mM lactate before and during perfusion with 5 mM fructose. [Pg.406]

Cardiovascular and septic shock, with resultant tissue hypoperfusion, are the most common causes of lactic acidosis. Poor tissue perfusion and hypoxia influence enzymatic pyruvate and lactate metabolism to stimulate anaerobic glycolysis and to decrease lactate utilization. This leads to hyperlactatemia and lactic acidosis. The mortality rate of this type of lactic acidosis may be as high as 80% and correlates with the degree of hyperlactatemia. [Pg.989]

The significance of the primary fermentation of lactose to L-lactate is well recognized in cheese manufacture (see Section IIIA5). However, less significance has been attached to the subsequent changes in lactose, and lactate metabolism received relatively little attention in most varieties until recently. However, these latter changes are of major proportions they are critical in some varieties, e.g., Swiss and Camembert, and are probably of some importance in all varieties. [Pg.200]
