Chemical Titles is a computer-produced list of titles of chemical papers arranged by keywords (KWIC, keyword in context), and produced by Chemical Abstracts Services. The titles appear so that the keywords are listed in the center of the column. It is based on the contents pages of some 700 journals abstracted in Chemical Abstracts, and appears twice monthly. For the most efficient use, a list of keywords is compiled, and the availability of this service on magnetic tape means that computer-based searches of these titles can be made.

The statement that the title should be descriptive of the matter of a communication seems to be a truism, but insufficient attention appears to be paid to the titles of papers submitted to learned journals. This is particularly true when papers are part of a series—for example, one of a series of papers may be entitled Studies in the Chemistry of X and Y, Part 47. Attempted Synthesis of Y. Suppose X and Y are complex alkaloids often such a paper deals only with the preparation of some complex ring structures—oxaazulenes, perhaps—from which the investigators hope ultimately to synthesize the subject of their main interest. Hence the paper is really about oxaazulenes and not alkaloids X and Y. The repercussions of this on indexing are serious. However, the new keyword in context indexes Chemical Titles) which are compiled by computer from titles of papers and used for awareness in the period between original publications and effective use of chemical and physical abstracts, may alter this. As special keyword indexes are compiled from titles, authors may give more thought to the relation of a title to its paper. 

Chemical Abstracts Service are also producing a similar rapid digest to act as a guide to the literature dealing with the biological action of organic compounds, known as Chemical-Biological Activities. Keyword-in-context, notation, molecular formula and author indexes are provided.

Keywords are posted against field names in such a way as to create a keyword-in-context situation, l.e., a keyword can later be searched in terms of the field in which it was entered. For example, the keyword RASH can be used as an indication for one product, an adverse reaction to another product, and a contraindication for a third product. In searching, the keyword can be used alone or as a field value condition of a particular field. 

Hydrolysis is a reaction of water with another substance to yield one or more reaction products. In context with RR, mainly ester and ether groups are being hydrolyzed. Because h. of esters in - oleo-chemistry and h. of glucosidic bonds in saccharide chemistry are different as to starting materials, reaction conditions and end products, they are covered under the following keywords - hydrolysis in oleochemistry, - hydrolysis of glucosidic linkages. 

This means there are 42 entries that have the words AMBIDENT and NUCLEOPHILE somewhere in them in the titles, keywords, or index entries. We can now, if we wish, display any or all of them. But a particular entry might have these two words in unrelated contexts, for example, it might be a paper about ambident electrophiles, but which also has NUCLEOPHILE as an index term. We would presumably get fewer papers, but with a higher percentage of relevant ones, if we could ask for AMBIDENT NUCLEOPHILE, and in fact, the system does allow... 

Each linearized structural formula is followed in a third column by keywords describing the context in which it is discussed and by the numbeKs) of the section(s) in which it occurs. 

Whenever an empirical formula does not show how the elements are combined in groups, it is followed by a linearized structural formula, which reveals the connectivity of the compound(s) underlying the empirical formula and serves to distinguish substances which are identical in composition but differ in the arrangement of elements. The nonpermuted empirical formulas are followed by keywords. They describe the context in which the compounds represented by the empirical formulas are discussed. Section numbers direct the reader to relevant positions in the book.

Keywords are a tool to browse quickly without having to access the complete text. Keywords are used to identify and retrieve resumes for the user.
