Kaolin mixture

This consists of a basic carbonate, corrc-sponding in composition approximately with the formula, 2pbC0 Pb(OH), It may contain various impurities resulting from the manufacture, especially basic lead acetate and it may he adulterated with barium sulphate, lead sulphate, zinc white, bone-ash, witlicrite, gyi>sum, chalk or clay (kaolin). Mixtures of white lead with barium sulphate an given special names, e.g. Venetian white (equal weights of white lead and barium sulphate), Hamburg white (l part of white lead to i parts of barium sulphate), Dutch white (i part of white lead to 3 parts of barium sulphate). Wliite lead mixed with gum and moulded into cakes is termed Krem s white. [Pg.372]

Figure 7.23 concerns an alumina and kaolin mixture. The kaolin is used here as a diluting agent for an alumina where the aim is to test the specific catalytic performance in cracking of heavy fractions. These fractions contain molecules that are too voluminous to be converted directly inside the pores of the HY zeolite (pore diameter approximately 8 A) and it is thus necessary for them to be pre-cracked on an alumina where the pore diameter (above 50 A)... [Pg.148]

For the magnetite/kaolin mixtures the magnetite appears to increase the mechanical strength of the deposit. [Pg.85]

An isolated report describes patients suffering from chronic diarrhoea, who were stabilised taking codeine phosphate, but who experienced a relapse when the codeine was added to Kaolin Mixture. An in vitro study suggested the bioavailability of codeine may be reduced by adsorption onto kaolin. ... [Pg.189]

Kaolin is practically insoluble in water and organic solvents. It is also insoluble in mineral acids and solutions of alkali hydroxides. Unless sterilized, it may be heavily contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacillus anthracis, clostridium tetani and clostridium welchii. It can be sterilized by maintaining the whole at a temperature not less than 160°C for not less than one hour. The primary applieations of Kaolin USP in the pharmaceutical industry are as an adsorbent at eoneentrations of 7.5 to 55%, dusting powders at 25%, and poultices at a level of 53%. Kaolin has also been used as a diluent in tablet and capsule formulations. Kaolin Mixture with Pectin (Gennaro, 1990), an example of a pharmaceutical adsorbent formulation, is shown below. [Pg.419]

Both the Toth and Alcoa processes provide aluminum chloride for subsequent reduction to aluminum. Pilot-plant tests of these processes have shown difficulties exist in producing aluminum chloride of the purity needed. In the Toth process for the production of aluminum chloride, kaolin [1332-58-7] clay is used as the source of alumina (5). The clay is mixed with sulfur and carbon, and the mixture is ground together, pelletized, and calcined at 700°C. The calcined mixture is chlorinated at 800°C and gaseous aluminum chloride is evolved. The clay used contains considerable amounts of silica, titania, and iron oxides, which chlorinate and must be separated. Silicon tetrachloride and titanium tetrachloride are separated by distillation. Resublimation of aluminum chloride is requited to reduce contamination from iron chloride. [Pg.147]

Cyclopentadiene oligomers have been formed by vapor deposition of CPD on kaolin to afford a sorbant for removal of oil from water (71). They are also employed as coatings for controlling release rates of fertilizers (72). Thermal addition of sulfur to a mixture of DCPD and CPD oligomers has led to a number of beneficial appHcations such as waste water oil adsorbant powdery foams (73), plasticized backing for carpets and artificial turfs (74), and in modified sulfur cements for encapsulating low-level radioactive wastes (75). [Pg.435]

Cera.mic, The ceramic substrate is made from a mixture of siUcon dioxide, talc, and kaolin to make the compound cordierite [12182-53-5]. Cordierite possesses a very low coefficient of thermal expansion and is thermal-shock resistant. The manufacturing process involves extmding the starting mixture (which is mixed with water and kneaded into a sort of dough) through a complex die to form the honeycomb stmcture. The extmded piece is dried and fired in a kiln to form the cordierite. The outside or circumferential dimension is formed by the die, and the length is cut later with a ceramic saw. [Pg.486]

Pellets or tablets (1.5-10 mm in diameter), rings (6-20 mm) and multichanneled pellets (20-40 mm in diameter and 10-20 mm high) are used when a high mechanical strength is required. They are produced by compressing a mixture of the support powder and several binders (kaolin day, stearic acid) and lubricants (graphite) in a press. [Pg.195]

Table 8.54 indicates the main characteristics of X-ray powder diffraction. Powder samples of lmg or greater can be analysed. The principal advantage is that substances (e.g. BaS04) can be identified directly, and not indirectly via their elements (e.g. Ba and S). This is particularly advantageous if both silica and silicates (kaolin, talc) are present. Detection limits are matrix dependent, but ca. 3% in a two-phase mixture, with synchrotron radiation ca. 0.1 %. [Pg.644]

Kaolin, China clay, terra alba, argille, porcelain clay, and white bole are the generic names used to refer to primary clays that include three distinct white minerals - kaolinite, nacrite, and dickite - all of which share a very similar composition but differ slightly in their structure. Kaolin is rarely found pure, but as a natural mixture with other varieties of clay together, the various clays make up over 95% of the total weight of the mixture, other earthy... [Pg.258]

The effect of the components and conditions of preparation on the properties of a 70/30 LDPE/clay composite is shown in Table I. The 10/90 mixture of LDEE Bakelite Polyethylene Resin DYNH-1 (Union Carbide Corp.) and Hydrite 10 clay (Georgia Kaolin Co.) was compounded at 150 C in the Brabender Plasticorder in the presence of MAH and/or t-butyl perbenzoate (tBPB). The EE-coated clay was then mixed with additional DYNH-1 LDPE at 130°C to yield a 70/30 PE/clay composite. A 30 70 PE/clay concentrate was prepared in a similar manner at 150 C and converted to a 70/30 EE/ clay composite at 130 C. The 10/90 PE/clay concentrate is an easily handled, clay-like product while the 30/70 concentrate is... [Pg.472]

Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative that does not take long to act and is therefore useful in acute constipation. The bulk-forming laxative ispaghula husk takes longer to act when compared with bisacodyl but is useful for long-term administration. Lactulose, which is an osmotic laxative, has a lag time of about 48 hours before onset of action. Loperamide and kaolin and morphine mixture are antidiarrhoeals used in acute diarrhoea. [Pg.246]

The relative ease with which VpOr can be reduced to V(III) in aluminosilicates indicate the exiirence of weak metal-surface interactions and the inability of the surface to effectively passivate vanadium. Similarly, V on Kaolin (and metakaolin) exist mostly as the "free oxide and can (in part) be reduced to V(III) species. Therefore, DFCC systems containing metakaolin microspheres (or amorphous aluminosilicates (15)) should not be as effective as sepiolite in passivating metals TTke Ni and V. In fact, DCC mixtures loaded with 5000 ppm Ni-equivalents (that is 0.6% V + 0.38% Ni) are not metals resistant when metakaolin is used as a metals scavenger (1) ... [Pg.210]

XPS can be used to quantify HPAM adsorption onto minerals at various polymer bulk concentrations. It is seen here that kaolinite has twice the affinity for HPAM than feldspar at pH 9.0 and 50 ppm. Little or no adsorption was monitored on the surface of quartz or mica. Imaging XPS to monitor selective adsorption of mineral mixes proved difficult. Flocculating a mineral mixture of kaolinite, mica and quartz caused the kaolin floes to encapsulate the other minerals. This created a layer of kaolin on the quartz and mica prohibiting polymer mapping on their surfaces. It is shown that the effectiveness of the kaolin recovery is more strongly affected by encapsulation of other minerals during flocculation rather than the selective adsorption process. [Pg.79]
