Primary clay is also known as residual clay, indicating that they are either the in situ residue of one type of weathered rock or the transported residue of many types of rocks most primary clay deposits occur, however, in situ, at the location where the clay particles were formed. The clay is usually quite pure and colorless or white, but very small relative amounts of minerals mixed with the clay, such as quartz and/or iron oxides, may impart to it a yellow, brown, or green color. Primary clay is also characterized by the extreme fineness of its particles, which usually measure below 2 micrometers (0.002 mm) in diameter. The more than 20 different types of primary clay minerals can be distinguished by their chemical composition, which varies widely, and by their physical properties. Primary clays that have been used for making ceramic objects are listed in Table 55. [Pg.258]

The standard diet used in our experiments is a semipurified, cholesterol-free preparation that is composed of 25% protein, 40% sucrose, 13% coconut oil, 1% corn oil, 15% cellulose, 5% mineral mix, and 1% vitamin mix. XPS can be used to quantify HPAM adsorption onto minerals at various polymer bulk concentrations. It is seen here that kaolinite has twice the affinity for HPAM than feldspar at pH 9.0 and 50 ppm. Little or no adsorption was monitored on the surface of quartz or mica. Imaging XPS to monitor selective adsorption of mineral mixes proved difficult. Flocculating a mineral mixture of kaolinite, mica and quartz caused the kaolin floes to encapsulate the other minerals. This created a layer of kaolin on the quartz and mica prohibiting polymer mapping on their surfaces. It is shown that the effectiveness of the kaolin recovery is more strongly affected by encapsulation of other minerals during flocculation rather than the selective adsorption process. [Pg.79]

As far as one can tell from the data presented, verdine facies minerals are found on the surface of shallow marine sediments (Odin, 1988 Thamban and Rao, 2000 Kronen and Glenn, 2000). Berthierine in sedimentary rocks (Fritz and Toth, 1997 Moore and Hughes, 2000) formed at temperatures below 70 °C (Hornibrook and Long-staffe, 1996). It can apparently form from verdine facies minerals or by various mineral reactions during diagenesis (Fritz and Toth, 1997 Velde, 1989).
