Just-Completed Project

Input from the client, owner, or customer can be obtained in many ways, depending on circumstances. At the informal end of the spectrum, post-project input might be obtained through a private and casual one-on-one conversation. On the other extreme, a formal questionnaire might be sent to the client, owner, or customer. The input method must fit the situation and be based on a sincere desire to view the just-completed project or, more specifically, the services delivered from the client, owner, or customer s perspective as a means of improving the management of subsequent projects.

Various relationships between the inner membrane in the mitochondrial cavity and the outer membrane delimiting the mitochondria have been described. Inside the mitochondria, the inner membrane may form independent septa or lamellae in a cavity that remains continuous. Another possibility is that the outer and inner membranes are in fact intimately connected. In that case, the septa may either form infolds of the three layers of the mitochondrial membrane or may just be projections of the inner electron-dense layer of the outer mitochondrial membrane. It becomes important to determine whether these projections end abruptly at some distance from the outer membrane or if they extend throughout the entire width of the mitochondrial cavity to form complete septa separating the main mitochondrial cavity into numerous smaller cavities. 

Before this total synthesis project began, we had just completed a diversity-oriented synthesis project that made use of the allylboration reaction to access simple substituted a-methylene y-lactones, which were further functionalized using a variety of transition metal-catalyzed reactions. We were now interested in applying this allylboration methodology to pursue a target-oriented synthetic problem that would demonstrate its suitability toward a complex natural product. Chinensiolide B presented this sort of challenge. 

Maureen Mackintosh is Professor of Economics at the Open University. She is a development economist specializing in the analysis of markets in health care and medicines, with particular reference to African contexts. She has just completed, with a number of collaborators including Paula Tibandebage, Samuel Wangwe, Watu Wamae and Norman Clark, a DFID/ESRC-funded project on Industrial Productivity and Health Sector Performance, the results of which inform a number of chapters in this book. Other recent collaborative research has focussed on the role of non-governmental public action in access to medicines, and on payments for maternal health care. 

The second perspective might be that of the leader of some large project where chemical analyses are just a side issue, where sample numbers are large and chemical niceties might be completely swamped by, say, biological variability here a statistician will be necessary to make sense of the results in the context of a very complex model. Chemistry is a bit harder to relate to than many other industries in that the measured quantities are often abstract, invisible, and only indirectly linked to what one wants to control. 

Thus the rationale for LIMS technology in the R D lab is not just an improvement in productivity or in the speed at which particular analyses can be completed, but also lies in the lab s ability to complete entire task projects in shorter time. 

The Otway Project is using a multilevel completion with three U-tubes to sample above and below the gas-water contact of a depleted gas reservoir, while C02 is injected in a well located 300 meters downdip. The uppermost U-tube was installed just below the mudstone cap rock and is sampling predominantly supercritical CH4, while the lower two U-tubes initially produced water, but transitioned to predominantly C02 and CH4 as the gas-water contact was pushed down by the increasing volumes of C02.
