The workshop was organized by the CNR (National Research Council of Italy) and INSTM (Italian Interuniversity Consortium for the Science and Technology of Materials) in the frame of the activities of the EU Network of Excellence (NoE) IDECAT (Integrated Design of Catalytic Nanomaterials for Sustainable Production). 

Danilo Corradini is research director at the Institute of Chemical Methodologies of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and a member of the General Scientific Advisory Board of CNR. His involvement in separation science started in 1976 with his research work on chromatography and electrophoresis for his PhD studies in chemistry, which was carried out at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, under the direction of Michael Lederer, founder and first editor of the Journal of Chromatography. In 1983-1984, he worked with Csaba Horvath, the pioneer of HPLC, at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, where he initiated his first investigations on the HPLC of proteins and peptides, which he continued at the Institute of Chromatography of CNR after he returned to Italy.

Laitinen at the University of Illinois and expanded to include members of the CNR Centre on Electrode Processes at Milan when a joint research programme was instituted some 10 years ago. Academy was provided by C.N.R. (the Italian National Research Council), M.U.R.S.T. (the Italian Ministry for University, Scientific Research and Technology) and the University of Rome III. Approximately 200 scientists attended the meeting, most of them Italians, but, with a sizeable international participation. Thirteen invited plenary lectures and six oral presentations were given, and fourteen posters were displayed.

The second International Workshop on Oxide-based Systems at the Crossroads of Chemistry was held at Villa Olmo in Como, October 8-11, 2000, in the framework of A. Volta Celebrations (1996-2000), under the auspices of the Universities of Insubria, Naples Federico II and Turin, Italian National Research Council (CNR) and Italian Zeolite Association. It was attended by nearly 100 scientists, engineers and industrial researchers coming from about 20 countries.
