Isolation and Synthesis

Oil seeds are dried at first to a water content of about 10% to avoid enzymatic hydrolysis. Then they are expelled (pressed) to a fat content of 20%. The ex-peller cake is extracted with hydrocarbons, usually hexane, and is later removed from the oil with water steam. Hexane solubility in water is only 0.1%. Bleaching of the raw oils occurs with aluminum silicates containing montmorillonite at approximately 60°C. Deodorization is the final step in the purification of the fatty raw materials from plants and occurs essentially by steam distillation. [Pg.81]

Milk is defatted by centrifugation, animal tissues by heating and sedimentation. Saponification is no longer accomplished by sodium hydroxide treatment, but by active earth-catalyzed hydrolysis close to neutral pH values. [Pg.81]

Total syntheses of glycerolipids using protective groups for both the glycerol and phosphate groups usually start with l,2-isopropylidene-5 n-glycerol. This is readily obtained by oxidative cleavage of the bis-acetonide of D-manni- [Pg.82]

Uniform model compounds of glycerophospholipids with a large variety of headgroups are available on the gram scale by transphosphatidylation of di-oleoyl- or dimyristoyl-L-phosphatidylcholine with almost any chosen alcohol [Pg.83]

The situation changes drastically if long-chain oxidants are appMed. One example of a successful regioselective oxidation of a nonactivated carbon atom comes from the use of long-chain tertiary amines as catalysts. They are first oxidized to an aminoxide with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of iron(II) salts. These radical-type oxidants to form molecular complexes with long-chain alcohols [Pg.87]

In reality, NMR spectroscopy has broadened the scope and absolute possibility for performing more extensive as well as intensive studies with regard to recording the spectrum of isolated and synthesized organic molecules in addition to their mechanistic and stereochemical details hitherto inaccessible. Therefore, NMR spectroscopy finds its applications for compound identification, by means of a fingerprint technique very much identical to that used in lR-spectroscopy. Besides, it is invariably utilized as a specific method of assay for the individual constituents of a mixture. A few typical examples of drug assays will be dealt separately at the end of this chapter to justify its efficacy and usefulness. [Pg.340]

The effect is mainly due to the inhibition of NAD+-dependent aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) which causes an accumulation of acetaldehyde in the body after ethanol ingestion [17]. The compound responsible for the physiological activity of C. atramentarius is coprine 16, a AT -(l-hydroxycyclopropyl)-L-glutamic acid amide which has been isolated and synthesized, [16a,b]. Thus, when fed... [Pg.4]

The use of pyrotechnic mixtures for military purposes in rifles, rockets, and cannons developed simultaneously with the civilian applications such as fireworks. Progress in both areas followed advances in modern chemistry, as new compounds were isolated and synthesized and became available to the pyrotechnician. Berthollet s discovery of potassium chlorate in the 1780 s resulted in the ability to produce brilliant flame colors using pyrotechnic compositions, and color was added to the effects of sparks, noise, and motion previously available using potassium nitrate-based compositions. Chlorate -containing color-producing formulas were known by the 1830 s in some pyrotechnicians arsenals. [Pg.8]

At the turn of the nineteenth century, methods became available for the isolation of active principles from crude drugs. The development of chemistry made it possible to isolate and synthesize chemically pure compounds that would give reproducible biological results. In 1806, Serturner (1783-1841) isolated the first pure active principle when he purified morphine from the opium poppy. Many other chemically pure active compounds were soon obtained from crude drug preparations, including emetine by Pelletier (1788-1844) from ipecacuanha root quinine by Carentou (1795-1877) from cinchona bark strychnine by Magendie (1783-1855) from nux vomica and, in 1856, cocaine by Wohler (1800-1882) from coca. [Pg.4]

PTH is a single-chain polypeptide composed of 84 amino acid residues that is devoid of disulfide bonds and has a molecular weight of 9500. Biological activity of the human hormone resides primarily in the amino terminal end of the protein (i.e., amino acids 1-34). This portion of PTH has full biological activity both in vivo and in vitro. Synthetic fragments of the 1-34 portion of the PTH molecule have been synthesized. A paraneoplastic hormone, PTH related peptide (PTHrP) has been identified, isolated, and synthesized. PTHrP is... [Pg.755]

Over the years, scores of seemingly counterintuitive methods have been tried to cure the addict. When morphine was first isolated and synthesized, it was considered to be, and utilized as, a cure for opium addiction. Later, heroin was created, and used as a treatment for morphinism. In the mid-twentieth century, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) likewise was tried as a therapy. The sad truth is that even today there is no real cure for any of the various forms of opiate addiction. [Pg.52]

In 1795 the British admiralty finally mandated a ration of concentrated lime or lemon juice for all British sailors (hence the name limeys ). Scurvy continued to be a problem in some other parts of the world until 1932, when Hungarian scientist Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, and W. A. Waugh and C. G. King at the University of Pittsburgh, isolated and synthesized ascorbic acid. [Pg.131]

In 1912, Hopkins reported a factor m milk needed for the growth of rats. In 1913, Osborne and Mendel demonstrated that milk factor is fat soluble, and present in other fats also, McCollum and Davis, in 1913-1915, identified milk factor (fat-soluble A) in butter and egg yolk. In 1917, McCollum and Simmonds found xerophthalmia in rats due to lack of fat-soluble A. In 1920, Drummond renamed fat-soluble A, vitamin A. In 1930, Moore determined that carotene is a precursor of vitamin A. See also . During 1930-1937, Karrer et al, isolated and synthesized vitamin A. In 1935, Wald reported visual purple in retina to be a complex of protein and vitamin A. [Pg.1698]

That year, R. Gordon Wasson, an enthnomycologist, published an article about Psilocybe mushrooms in Life magazine. This article brought the mushrooms to the attention of the general public for the first time. As a result of the article, thousands of people flocked to Mexico in search of the mind-altering mushroom. About that same time, the psychoactive chemical psilocybin was isolated and synthesized by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, who also discovered LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide). [Pg.424]

Since these molecules have been isolated and synthesized, a number of other p -carboline alkaloids have been developed in the laboratory. Michael Valentine Smith describes the preparation of several analogues in his Psychedelic Chemistry. The 6- or 10-methoxy isomer of harmaline, sometimes known as 10-methoxy-harmalan, is about half again as potent by weight as harmaline. [Pg.438]

During the 1930s. R. J. Williams and his collaborators recognized. isolated, and synthesized pantothenic acid. Because its occurrence is so widespread, it was called panioihenic acid from the Greek, meaning "from everywhere."... [Pg.887]

Actual case studies using these isolation and syntheses as well as mass spectral and NMR approaches are outlined in the remainder of this chapter. This collaborative multidisciplinary strategy is applied to the structure elucidation of all the impurity and degradant case studies presented. The successful elucidation of these structures was essential to predict potential toxicity, set threshold limits, and identify ways to prevent or greatly reduce their formation. The case studies have been organized into degradation and process-related impurities examples. [Pg.368]

An improved synthesis of traws-3-amino-4-trifluoromethyl-2-azetidinone (105), a precursor of several monobactams, has been achieved129. 4-Phenylsulphonyl-2-azetidinone (106) has been used to synthesize the monobactam intermediates 107 and 108130. The utility of the imidazolylsulphonate group in the synthesis of monobactams has been demonstrated131. 6-Sulphoaminopenicillanic acid (110) has been both isolated and synthesized (from 6-aminopenicillanic acid)132. [Pg.960]

The metabolism of A -THC and A -THC is very important, and two more metabolites from the latter have been isolated and synthesized. The synthesis involves reaction of a suitably functionalized resorcinol (430) with a cis-menthadienol (431) (Scheme 31) for one of the metabolites (428) the other (429)... [Pg.87]

In an acid dilute alcohol medium, comparable to wine (pH 3.2), de Freitas (1995) showed that the carbocation formed from procyanidin B3 (Figure 6.23) could easily react with a nucleophilic compound, such as ethanethiol. The 4-o -ethylthioflavan-3-ol derived from (-l-)-catechin has been isolated and synthesized (Figure 6.24). Its structure has been formally established by NMR of the proton and Ci3 after acetylation. Thiolysis is a standard technique using various thiols (toluene a-thiol, benzene thiol) to study procyanidic oligomer structures. This... [Pg.160]

In 2000 and 2001 we tried to use the same proportions of solvents to biomass as were used in 1999. In 2002, extracts of roots and tops were partitioned between hexane and aqueous methanol, as shown in Figure 1. In 2003, we tested isolated and synthesized single compounds in different concentrations. [Pg.411]

Karrer synthesizes vitamin E. Kuhn isolates and synthesizes vitamin Bg (pyridoxine). [Pg.863]

A South Korean research group has isolated and synthesized daumone, the pheromone that induces hibernation in Caenorhabditis elegans worms when food becomes scarce, thus extending their life span Nature, 2005,433, 541). Following is a ball-and-stick representation of daumone. [Pg.180]

The emitting molecule, decarboxyketoludferin, has been isolated and synthesized. When it is excited photochemically by photon absorption in basic solution (pH > 7.5-8.0), it fluoresces, giving a fluorescence emission specfrum that is identical to the emission spectrum produced by the interaction of firefly luciferin and firefly luciferase. The emitting form of decarboxykefoluciferin has thus been identified as the enol dianion. In neutral or acidic solution, the emission spectrum of decarboxyketo-luciferin does not match the emission spectrum of the bioluminescent system. [Pg.439]

In 1945, Angler and co-workers isolated and synthesized folic acid. That same year. Dr. Tom Spies showed that folic acid was effective in the treatment of megaloblastic anemia of pregnancy and of tropical sprue. [Pg.374]

Lichen chemistry continues to be a flourishing branch of natural product chemistry. Since the last major review by Elix et al. in volume 35 of this series 274) many new and interesting lichen substances have been isolated and synthesized. This suggests that an update is desirable. As in the previous articles new methods for structure elucidation and synthesis, biosynthesis, chemotaxonomy and biological activities of lichen substances will be discussed. Some other relatively recent treatments of the subject need to be mentioned A short chapter by... [Pg.4]
