Polygas Olefins. Refinery propylene and butenes are polymerized with a phosphoric acid catalyst at 200°C and 3040—6080 kPa (30—60 atm) to give a mixture of branched olefins up to used primarily in producing plasticizer alcohols (isooctyl, isononyl, and isodecyl alcohol). Since the olefins are branched (75% have two or more CH groups) the alcohols are also branched. Exxon, BASE, Ruhrchemie (now Hoechst), ICl, Nissan, Getty Oil, U.S. Steel Chemicals (now Aristech), and others have all used this olefin source. [Pg.458]

Dibasic Acid Esters. Dibasic acid esters (diesters) are prepared by the reaction of a dibasic acid with an alcohol that contains one reactive hydroxyl group (see Esters, organic). The backbone of the stmcture is formed by the acid. The alcohol radicals are joined to the ends of the acid. The physical properties of the final product can be varied by using different alcohols or acids. Compounds that are typically used are adipic, azelaic, and sebacic acids and 2-ethyIhexyl, 3,5,5-trimethyIhexyl, isodecyl, and tridecyl alcohols. [Pg.264]

The overall growth for -butyraldehyde depends primarily on / -butanol and 2-ethyIhexanol. 2-EthyIhexanol is expected to face competition from other alcohols, eg, isodecyl alcohol [25339-17-7] as well as from newer production sources. [Pg.381]

Plasticizers. Plasticizers are materials that soften and flexibilize inherently rigid, and even britde polymers. Organic esters are widely used as plasticizers in polymers (97,98). These esters include the benzoats, phthalates, terephthalates, and trimeUitates, and aUphatic dibasic acid esters. Eor example, triethylene glycol bis(2-ethylbutyrate) [95-08-9] is a plasticizer for poly(vinyl butyral) [63148-65-2] which is used in laminated safety glass (see Vinyl POLYMERS, poly(vinyl acetals)). Di(2-ethyUiexyl)phthalate [117-81-7] (DOP) is a preeminent plasticizer. Variation of acid and/or alcohol component(s) modifies the efficacy of the resultant ester as a plasticizer. In phthalate plasticizers, molecular sizes of the alcohol moiety can be varied from methyl to tridecyl to control permanence, compatibiUty, and efficiency branched (eg, 2-ethylhexyl, isodecyl) for rapid absorption and fusion linear (C6—Cll) for low temperature flexibiUty and low volatility and aromatic (benzyl) for solvating. Terephthalates are recognized for their migration resistance, and trimeUitates for their low volatility in plasticizer appHcations. [Pg.396]

Certain higher phthalates are also available. For example, ditridecyl phthaiate and di-isodecyl phthaiate are used in high-temperature cable insulation, the former having the better high-temperature properties. Because of its greater hydrocarbon nature than DIOP, di-isodecyl phthaiate has lower water extract-ability and is used, for example, with epoxidised oils in baby-pants. [Pg.331]

Other olefins applied in the hydroformylation process with subsequent hydrogenation are propylene trimer and tetramer for the production of decyl and tridecyl alcohols, respectively, and C7 olefins (from copolymers of C3 and C4 olefins) for isodecyl alcohol production. [Pg.164]

Other chemicals that are common in different RSL are phthalates. Phthalates are usually used as softening agents in plastics to obtain the required flexibility. The most common phthalates included on restriction lists for the leather industry are bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), di- isononyl phthalate (DINP), D- isodecyl phthalate (DIDP) and di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP). All these chemicals are included on the SVHC list (Candidate List), and currently (2012) there is a proposal to restrict the placing of products containing DEHP, BBP and DBP on the market in the EU. [Pg.260]

Phthalate esters orphthalates are molecules predominantly used in commerce to make plastic flexible. The substances produced in highest quantity, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP or DOP), di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) and di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP) are used almost exclusively as plasticisers in flexible PVC. Recently, these phthalates have been the focus of regulatory attention around the... [Pg.28]
