Interplay of Mechanisms

The general concepts as they were derived in the previous section apply only to theoretical models and/or idealized systems. In real systems, both superexchange and hopping mechanisms through modular bridges require a more sophisticated treatment. In fact, both mechanisms are omnipresent in charge-transfer reactions and interplay with each other. [Pg.21]

This qualitative model, based on semiempirical MO theory, focuses entirely on the so-called electronic effects, as the A—H bonding orbital interactions are often called. However, steric repulsion (i.e., the destabilizing orbital interactions) between the hydrogen substituents in AH3 is just as important in the interplay of mechanisms that determine whether the molecule adopts a planar or a pyramidal shape. In fact, as will become clear from the following discussion, which is based on a Kohn-Sham DFT study at the BP86/TZ2P level,107 108 steric repulsion turns out to be the decisive factor in determining the pucker of our example.133... [Pg.57]

The exact course of events depends on the relative strength of the different mechanisms at work. Just as people "may vary in the degree to which their reactions are dominated by endowment or by contrast,"8 they may also differ in their susceptibility to adaptive preference formation. A person dominated by the contrast effect and highly vulnerable to the sour-grapes mechanism will initially be very miserable and then quickly overcome the grief. A person dominated by the endowment effect will not suffer so much in the first place. Others may be miserable for a long time, and still others may experience cycles of misery and relief. If we add counteradaptive preference formation to the range of mechanisms, even more possibilities come into play. Such interplay of mechanisms is the stuff of novels and of everyday life. Perhaps it is time for the social sciences to consider them. [Pg.47]

The tested amphoteric surfactants (betaine and sulfobetaine) are highly salt-tolerant and are excellent foamers. Adsorption of these surfactants is less dependent on salinity than adsorption of anionic surfactants, and the trends are not monotonic (Figure 13b). Adsorption of amphoteric surfactants may proceed by a complex interplay of mechanisms involving electrostatic and complexation mechanisms of both the cationic and the anionic group in the surfactant molecule (12, 87, 88). The trends in ad-... [Pg.290]

More productive chemical results, which stiU harness the destructive action of ultrasound on certain bonds, can be attained when sonication is applied to biological fluids (e.g. protein solutions) en route to bionanomaterials [15], A conspicuous example can be found in sonochemically-prepared protein microspheres, in which the interplay of mechanical effects (emulsification) and chemical effects (formatiOT of transient species) is noticeable. A protein emulsion is readily created at the interface between two immiscible liquid phases, while radicals generated by water sonolysis promote disulfide bond cross-linking between cysteine residues. Surface modifications, via conjugation with monoclonal antibodies or RGD-containing peptides, can also be carried out [102, 103]. The sonochemical preparation of chitosan microspheres also exploits the intermolecular cross-linking of imine bonds from the sugar precursor [104]. [Pg.266]

The antagonistic effects of calcitonin on bone resorption also appear to require the presence of vitamin D. Thus the vitamin is necessary for the action of both PTH, which promotes resorption, and calcitonin, which inhibits it. This is just one more aspect of the complex interplay of mechanisms involving these three substances which ensure the stability of blood calcium and the proper maintenance of the calcified tissues through continuous remodelling. [Pg.451]

There can be subtle but important non-adiabatic effects [14, ll], due to the non-exactness of the separability of the nuclei and electrons. These are treated elsewhere in this Encyclopedia.) The potential fiinction V(R) is detennined by repeatedly solving the quantum mechanical electronic problem at different values of R. Physically, the variation of V(R) is due to the fact that the electronic cloud adjusts to different values of the intemuclear separation in a subtle interplay of mutual particle attractions and repulsions electron-electron repulsions, nuclear-nuclear repulsions and electron-nuclear attractions. [Pg.56]

While direct infection of the nenrons by HIV is not likely to be an important mechanism of nenrotoxicity (Pardo et al. 2001), there is a complex interplay of HIV envelope glycoprotein gpl20 nenrotoxicity and other immunopathogenic factors in the mechanisms of axonal or nenronal injury (Hoke and Comblath 2004). HIV infection most likely canses DRG cell body and axonal damage via different mechanisms of injnry in each structure (Hahn et al. 2008). [Pg.68]

If the change in cortical electrical characteristics is permanent, why don t seizures occur all the time This is probably because the occurrence of an individual seizure depends upon an interplay of environmental and internal brain factors which from time to time result in loss of the normal mechanisms that contain and control abnormal neuronal firing. Some common factors are sleep loss and fatigue, but it is impossible to determine what sets off a particular seizure in most patients. [Pg.445]

Overall, in this chapter we have attempted to emphasize the need for more in vivo studies to be conducted to clarify the dynamic interplay between mechanisms of drug transport and metabolism in the human intestine under in vivo conditions. There is also a need to develop additional in vivo techniques for direct measurements of these processes in regions along the GI tract in humans, and to relate the findings to various physiological/pathophysiological conditions. This would clearly increase our knowledge of the mechanisms involved, and provide in vivo data to help develop and validate rapid and reliable in vitro intestinal models. [Pg.181]
