And it s a story that needs telling, one that should have been told sooner. So much of what exists in libraries and on the Internet is incorrect, and so many accounts of what took place are distortions, that a mark of dishonor remains on the escutcheon of our research at Edgewood Arsenal. I ought to know, because I was there and fully immersed in that research.

It criticizes sales of prescription drugs via the Internet because such sales foster problems of abuse.

The US government easily discredited much of the CNN/Time story because the Pentagon said they had found no records of sarin use. Interestingly, however, following the Time disclosures and subsequent retractions, CNN set up an Internet bulletin board which was immediately bombarded by over 25,000 Vietnam veterans supporting the allegations concerning the use of sarin. The site was suddenly removed on 16 July 1998. 

Jeff L. Joseck, Trevor A. Kletz, and an unknown author on the Internet each communicate a different clever story within the first part of the chapter. 

A quick scan of newspapers, television, science magazines, or the internet on any given day has a fairly high likelihood of encountering a story (usually accompanied by a creative headline such as those above) regarding human health concerns linked to dusts, soils, or other earth materials. Many such concerns have been recognized and studied for decades, but new concerns arise regularly. 

DXM abuse can also lead to more serious dangers. The body temperature can rise, the heart starts to beat irregularly or at a faster rate (called tachycardia), blood pressure rises, and the user may lose consciousness. Death is also a very real possibility. While deaths related purely to DXM itself are rare, they do occur. A well-covered story in 2005 documented the deaths of five men who abused DXM, leading to the arrest of two other men who sold them the drug over the Internet. More common are deaths that happen when DXM is being used along with alcohol or another drug. 

The important points in this story are that it is best to stick to products from known manufacturers who have a reputation for carefully screening their ingredients to be skeptical of claims made in advertising and on the Internet and to keep yourself educated about substances that are suspected of being harmful. When in doubt, ask your doctor. It s part of his or her job to know about the safety and effectiveness of health products. 

Others continue to warm to the subject in a growing array of books and articles, with the Internet furnishing still more information. Along the way, there was Death by Injection The Story of the Medical Conspiracy Against America by Clarence Eustace Mullins, considered sort of an underground expose, not to mention Robert S. Mendelsohn s controversial Confessions of a Medical Heretic. There is also Paul Starr s Pulitzer-winning Social Transformation of American Medicine, published in 1982. 

Several years ago there was a story circulating the Internet that a good way to lose weight is to drink... 

Unfortunately, soybean historical literature and soybean-associated Internet Web sites are replete with factual errors. The misinformation keeps recycling from one publication or Web site to another without documentation. Attempts to correct these errors are met with stiff resistance (Hymowitz Shurtleff, 2005). Apparently, myths and legends make better stories than the truth for example, Morse (1950) reported... 

All kinds of horror stories travel around the Internet — such as the one about gel candles that explode and biun down your house. These stories are usually buttressed by the accounts of those who have seen it happen. Well, the gel candle story is almost 100 percent bunk. 

There is a story about Sommerfeld and thermodynamics that is cited in several sources [1, p.43], including the Internet. 

We were driving downtown [in September 2005], and Spike says, "You know, Sam, I ve got a great title When the Levees Broke. I want to do a documentary about New Orleans." So that night, I did some research on the Internet and wrote some notes. And the next day, I said, "We could do a doc that looks at the complications and the evolution of the hurricane and the personal stories of the people who were there." So Spike called Sheila Nevins at HBO and set up a meeting. 

With Bad Voodoo s War, we could do stuff over iChat, so that I could listen, which you see in the film. I could be listening while Toby was doing an interview of one of the guys. So it was as if I was in their tent with them, listening to the interview. I would say both of these films aren t about the Internet, but neither of them could have been made without it. The Internet allowed the soldiers (in The War Tapes) and Toby (in Bad Voodoo s War) and me to talk about what happened, and to examine how to best tell the story as it unfolds. 

Here is another story that is indicative of the way the world works right now Gates wrote the book The Road Ahead. One of my ex-bosses said that he visited a bookstore in Dallas, and there was a stack of Gates book near the checkout counter. He noticed that affixed to the cover of every book was a sticker that read, Recently updated to include the Internet. The road ahead. 

Cyan is a popular poison in detective stories, and readers may often have the impression that cyan is the most poisonous material known. Potassium cyanide was listed as number 4 on an Internet list of the 10 deadliest poisons. A closer look on this list will, however, reveal to anyone that the 10 deadliest poisons claimed ate not the most poisonous substances known.
