Photographic imaging

ColorFilm. Most color photographic images reproduced on press are made from positive color transparencies known as sHdes. Transparencies are preferred over color prints for reproduction because of superior sharpness, tonal contrast, and color saturation (see Color photography). 

The fineness of the grid pattern, called resolution, is quantified in terms of pixels per linear distance. Common practice for commercial quaUty images assumes that photographic images can be reproduced accurately using about 300 pixels per inch (120 pixels/cm).

This equation is exact, and therefore the determination of the principal radii of curvature at two points on the interface enables one to estimate Yij and Rq. However, it is also clear that the photographic image if analyzed, as such, is not accurate enough to give a satisfactory accuracy. 

Another procedure is to rewrite the relation in Equation 2 in terms of quantities which can be accurately measured from a photographic image (1,2,20). At point P we can let the radius of curvature be Rx p of curve Vj, Figure 1. The curve V2, which is perpendicular to Vj, and passes through P, will be such that OP is normal to both curves at P. These derivations have been described in detail (15). However, the relationship in Equation 5 was found to be very unsuitable for the determination of yij, since the curvatures are not easily evaluated from the photographic images. Especially, the older studies were unsatisfactory, arising from the inadequate optical and photographic techniques. Finally, pins should be cleaned and inspected to ensure they are free of any obstructions of fhe bps prior to use. Manufacturers have specific recommendations on best methods of cleaning their pins. Some vendors such as TeleChem International (www.arrayit.com) offer cleaning solutions and equipment (sonic baths, holders, etc.) for their pins and print heads. In our laboratory, we routinely inspect pins under a microscope before and after cleaning and keep photographic images as records.
