Pure science

Much earlier than these encyclopedias is a book first published in 1941 (Chalmers and Quarrell 1941, I960) and devoted to the physical examination of metals . This multiauthor book includes some recondite methods, such as the study of the damping capacity of solids (Section 5.1). In the second edition, the authors remark Not the least of the many changes that have taken place since the first edition appeared has been in the attitude of the metallurgist to pure science and to modern techniques involving scientific principles. The two editions span the period to which I have attributed the quantitative revolution , in Chapter 5. [Pg.214]

Torn between pure science and Bolton s pressure for profits, Carothers felt betrayed. Deeply distressed, Carothers reminded their superiors of Du Pont s promise that he could do basic research, free of commercial concerns. The purpose of pure research is to increase scientific knowledge but now, Carothers anguished, it is expected to pay its own way. As he said, his laboratory had the rather desperate feeling that its work must make money. [Pg.136]

In rewriting the book the theoretical and practical requirements have been deliberately increased. The equipment which sufficed during the last three decades has now become insufficient for those who desire to work at present-day problems, where difficulties have been accentuated alike in pure science and in technology. [Pg.440]

Pure science is a term we should reserve for the aspect of science associated with the urge to know and understand, which is built into the structure of the mind of all of us. Pure science is selfless. It should not be personified We can all practice it. [Pg.62]

The concept of biochemical individuality, as we have tried to make clear, does not throw a monkey wrench into the pure science of biology. There is nothing incompatible between the biochemical individuality concept and the recognition of the basic and fundamental importance of pure biology in all its phases. Investigation in this vast area should and must proceed without significant attention to biochemical individuality. [Pg.233]

To mention any obligation to another person seemed almost ungrateful in the circumstance. And what about the Nazi connection Did I really want to go off with a bunch of ex-SS types to the Amazonian rain forest On the other hand I was running out of money. And my lady friend had a penchant for torrid affairs carried on in my absence. As for the Nazi matter, I was confused. I knew that Max Planck was supposedly the only person ever to stand up to Hitler, telling him to keep his hands off the pure science of the Institute. Heintz had also gone far out of his way to let me know that his brother, also part... [Pg.144]

Both pure and applied science have gradually pushed further and further the requirements for accuracy and precision. However, applied science, particularly in the mass production of interchangeable parts, is even more exacting than pure science in certain matters of accuracy and precision. Walter A. Shewhart. [Pg.523]

Microbial tests are substantially less certain than chemical ones, especially when they entail quantification. Microbial limits must be looked at with some skepticism the real value might be something quite different—either higher or lower—than the reported one. Consider any absolute number with some caution the answers are never as clear as they might seem with microbiology. When it comes to enumeration, microbiology can be less than a pure science. [Pg.125]

The main obstacle to performing systematic detailed studies likely to provide an insight into the underlying chemical and physical phenomena appears to be the economical pressure for a marketable product, device or technology to pay for the research. Unfortunately, even scientific funds refuse to support pure science, though often readily finance projects without any serious substantiation, containing (mostly unrealistic) promises to make a revolution in production or technology. The present scattered and poorly coordinated approach can scarcely produce scientific results of considerable value. Rather, these are likely to be incommensurably small when juxtaposed to expenditures. [Pg.275]
