Another age-based segment is that referred to as the baby boomers. The term refers specifically to the cohort of people bom between 1945 and 1966 (Muller Cleaver, 2000). The expression baby boomers applies best to the countries of Canada, the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand where economic conditions after the Second World War were sound and families were encouraged. By way of contrast, war-affected countries in Europe and Asia and developing countries in other continents did not produce the same conditions for family life and did not experience such high birth rates. Nevertheless European and Japanese travellers, in particular, share some of the characteristics outlined in North American and Australian studies (You O Leary, 1999). [Pg.34]

It was concluded, using a sample of both Japanese and North American Internet stories, that the Japanese showed consistently greater awareness of the presence of other Japanese. The attitudes towards other Japanese travellers was not always positive because at times a desire to escape the confines of their own compatriots expectations emerged (Yagi, 2001). In the electronically-altered photographic images, different mixes of tourist... [Pg.124]

Horace Fletcher was born in 1849, and he spent his youth traveling around the world. By the time he turned forty he had made himself a rich man by importing Japanese art, toys, and novelties. His portly appearance bespoke the good life. And then came a pivotal moment Fletcher applied for life insurance, only to be turned down due to an unfavorable medical exam. He then became obsessed with health. The man who, up until that point, had shown no interest in matters of science, now began to expound a theory of health. Troubles come from too much of many things, he said, among them too much food and too much worry. ... [Pg.251]

A complementary style of nationality-based tourism studies involves the direct assessment of what motivates travellers, how they behave and what they derive from their experiences. Several of these studies are comparative, while others focus on just one nationality group. The comparative studies include work that compares groups on destination image and attitudes, on motivation, on travel patterns, in communication style and on satisfaction levels (Chadee Mattson, 1996 Kozak, 2001 Kozak Neild, 1998 Reisinger Turner, 1999 Richardson Crompton, 1998 Yuan MacDonald, 1990). The nationalities compared are varied and reflect convenience samples rather than systematic research programs. They include Japanese and Americans, British and German, Korean and... [Pg.36]

Hypersensitivity reactions (generalized urticaria or angio-edema) after the use of Japanese encephahtis vaccine have been reported from some countries (see Table 1) the vaccine constituents responsible for these events have not been identified (12). There has been a detailed report of the adverse effects, mainly allergic mucocutaneous reactions, of Biken vaccine in Danish travellers and US Marine Corps personnel (SEDA-22, 351). [Pg.1958]

Technology, television, transcontinental travel and international scientific and medical conferences continue to narrow the subjective variations. Differences in diagnosis, data measurement and interpretation will diminish with such exchanges. It is possible that methodology, study design and case report forms can be constructed that correct for culture, diet, and at least some subjective factors, which will allow comparability of efficacy and adverse events on dose/mg/ kg body weight measured between European, US and Japanese data. [Pg.360]
