What We Are Talking About

The patient reader will find ont that this book is unconventional in several aspects. This is partially dne to the fact that expert systems are an unconventional topic and require having from time to time a different point of view than one wonld expect at the beginning. [Pg.1]

Later in this chapter, we will start thinking about some initial aspects of intelligence to get a framework for what we want to address. [Pg.2]

Chapter 2 gives an overview of the ideas and concepts underlying the term expert systems. This is a necessary basis for understanding the approaches that are subsequently described. At this point, we will focus on two domains the conceptional background and the scientific methodologies that support the concepts. [Pg.2]

Chapter 3 provides a concise summary on technical design, programming paradigms, and development tools for expert systems. [Pg.2]

Chapter 4 covers technologies for representing and processing chemical information in a computer as well as a summary of supporting technologies that typically appear in expert systems. [Pg.2]

I want to make one other appropriate comment, and that is the Ames test could be considered as a nonspecific analytical methodology. Really, that is what we are talking about. [Pg.748]

First, we need to define generally what we are talking about A pressure relief device is any device that can purge a system from an overpressure condition. More particularly, an SRV is a pressure relief device that is self-actuated, and whose primary purpose is the protection of life and equipment. Through a controlled discharge of a required (rated) amount of fluid at a predetermined pressure, an SRV must prevent overpressure in pressurized vessels and systems, and it operates within limits which are determined by international codes. An SRV is often the final control device in the prevention of accidents or explosions caused by overpressure... [Pg.18]

Let s first define exactly what we are talking about Two-phase flow describes a condition whereby a flow stream contains fluid in the liquid phase and at the same time in the gas or vapour phase. Flashing flow occurs as a result of a decrease in pressure, and all or a portion of a liquid flow changes into vapour. It is possible for both flowing conditions, two-phase and flashing, to occur simultaneously within the same application. The complexity of the issue results from the fact that this condition is never stable and constantly changes during a relief cycle. [Pg.183]

If you are unsure what we are talking about, go back and readChapter 18 now ... [Pg.970]

In the case of 2D chirality what we are talking about is reaction at enantiotopic faces. The term used to describe the Prochiral faces are Re and rSiJ. Attack at opposing faces produces enan-i tiomeric compounds. [Pg.52]

When first examined the equations don t appear to be very different, one is written in terms of mole fractions, while the other is in terms of volume fractions. The difference is significant, however, but to see that we must first remind ourselves of the nature of these quantities. To be explicit in what we are talking about we will switch subscripts, using s and p to designate solvent and polymer, respectively. [Pg.336]

A sniper tends to make nasty personal comments in public. You know these people — in a middle of a meehng they shout out an inappropriate remark about the speaker. If you are the unfortunate speaker, you may lose your train of thought and feel embarrassed about the comment. To deal with this type, stop speaking, look the sniper directly in the eye, and ask, What does your comment have to do with what we are talking about ... [Pg.131]

We can perhaps get a clearer mental picture of what we are talking about if we imagine an undulating surface lying above the zy-plane. At the top of an isolated hill, P (Fig. 128), u will be a maximum at the bottom of a valley or lake, Qt u will be a minimum. The surface can only be horizontal at the point where ufbx and dufdy are both zero. [Pg.297]

That is, resolution is limited by the number of bed plates traversed by the two sample bands and by the small K effect. For a single bed development, a maximum value of / (= 0.38C ) occurs for (Rf) = 0.33. If we adjust Rf to a smaller value and use multiple development, we can simultaneously increase the distance traveled by the sample bands and decrease the importance of the small K effect. This can result in a substantial increase in resolution over that possible in a single bed development. A theoretical analysis of resolution in multiple development will illustrate what we are talking about. We will let (Ap.)2 equal an Rp value for a single development, and we will assume n identical solvent developments (same solvent, same solvent migration distance). It is easy to show that the total distance migrated by band 2 under these conditions (i.e., the apparent Rp value of 2 after n developments) is 1 — [1 — (/ ir)2] , so that resolution is given by [cf. Eq. (2-5a)] ... [Pg.229]

To be sure, Baeyer said, what we are talking about are pictures or representations (Bilder), which must never be confused with real things themselves, but Hertz s comment applies whenever our theoretical pictures approach the unseen reality. These same considerations apply to the benzene theory. Baeyer proceeded to summarize recent research on the structure of benzene. The benzene formula proposed years earlier by James Dewar had quickly been ruled out as unable to explain the... [Pg.296]

This identifies what we are talking about—the modem phenomenon of total death, that is, not capitalism versus communism or democracy versus the police state—but does not explain how we arrived at the brink of so absolute an abyss. Elliot supplies a clue to the answer in his discussion of the First World War. The one thing that stands out overall, he observes, is that at no time, before, during or after the war, was there a living organic structure in society [e.g., church, political party, custom, body of law] with sufficient strength to resist the new man-made and machine-made creation [organized] death. ... [Pg.780]

However, we should not scorn the efforts of such committees even though we will continue to call CH3COOH acetic acid and not ethanoic acid . It is indeed very important, except perhaps in public relations and advertising, that the names we use are unambiguous, so that it is clear what we are talking about. Trivial names are also part of the nomenclature but they need to refer back to a systematic naming system so that doubts about their meaning can always be settled. [Pg.57]

But is this not what you constantly try to achieve That is nothing new. Continue doing it. This is not meant to be the topic of this book. What we are talking about here is the revenue potential on a completely different scale. [Pg.65]

A distinction is sometimes made between contamination and pollution of the environment and Bowen [2] (p.259) has stated that contamination is the release of substances into an environment at measurable concentrations, while pollution implies that these substances have measurable effects on living organisms. On the basis of this view, the release of oxygen by plants during photosynthesis can be regarded as contamination of the environment, while the scent of a rose is seen as a kind of environmental pollution. Clearly, these definitions will not do at all if we are to know what we are talking about. Contamination of the environment has to be regarded as the dispersion of some substance in it at concentrations which may produce undesirable effects - when the undesirable effects are evident, the contamination amounts to environmental pollution. The concept of contamination can... [Pg.2]

We begin with a boring set of commentaries—a set of definitions, so that we all know what we are talking about. If you do not want to wade through a welter of what seems like superfluous information, you can skip this section, but at least be aware of the distinction between quasi-static and reversible processes. Also, you should be motivated to ponder the statements at the conclusion of this section. [Pg.1]

Tom Rauchfuss, University of Illinois I want to start off with a comment about educational trends that we are seeing at the university level. That is, the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), which are fundamental to driving the research that underpins much of what we are talking about today and yesterday, are peanuts compared to the National Institutes of Health (NET). [Pg.212]
