The Internet has become a wonderful source of (sometimes free) software for numerical analysis. Browse through it, and you will soon see that Fortran remains the programming language for serious numerical computation. One excellent book that is currently available without charge is... [Pg.76]

Parts of this strategy have already been mapped out through the introduction of software products such as JAVA, an object-oriented programming language (6) suitable for immediate integration with Internet tools for distributed application across wide-area networks. In this approach, solutions to specialized problems are made available to users in the form of applets, or program modules, which can easily be... [Pg.244]

Excel has the capability of using routines called Macros that can be called inside the spreadsheet. These routines can be programs written in a version of the BASIC programming language called Visual Basic for Applications. Macros can be obtained from other sources, such as internet websites, and placed in any spreadsheet. [Pg.67]

Recently, another object-oriented language for web compatibility, namely Java [13], has been created and it revolutionized the WWW of the Internet age. Several specialized books and free Internet web resources in the area of computer programming, languages, compilers, etc. are available for interested readers. Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) include NetBeans and Eclipse. The java program is compiled using javac in the command line. The JDK needs to be installed. [Pg.6]

Sun Microsystems began with four employees in 1982 as a computer hardware manufecturer. With the rise of the Internet, the company seized the opportunity to create its computer language with its special tool, the Java Virtual Machine, which could be downloaded to any type of machine. This Java Virtual Machine contained a program called an interpreter, rather than a compiler, to act as an interface between the specific machine (platform) and the user. The result was a great enhancement in the interoperabihty of data on the Internet, and Java became the primary programming language on the Web. [Pg.415]

This network became known as ARPANET. In the I980 s the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) implemented its Open Systems Interconnection—Reference Model (OSI—RM) to facilitate the interoperability of different hardware components. The creation in the I990 s of new software and programming languages, such as browsers and HTML, made the explosive growth of Internet activity and Web sites possible. [Pg.1070]

An interpreted programming language with many similarities to Java. It is most often used in the context of client-side scripts embedded into HTML pages (for animation, user input verification, and similar tasks) or as scripting language for VRML worlds. See Internet. [Pg.1456]

Furthermore, the Internet has supplanted the traditional encyclopedia as well as a number of other sources of service and information. We can make reservations, plan vacations, play interactive games, learn a language, listen to music or radio programs, read the newspaper, and find out... [Pg.74]

Internet has generated HTML (hypertext language) and JavaScript, which are programs and protocols for creating websites. [Pg.556]
