One small company, Engineering Animation, a software algorithm development company, came to us with only 20 employees in 1991. They now have over 900 employees and have developed software that allows medical students to study the human body in three dimensions. They then turned around and used that same base technology to create the animation for interactive games and movies such as Small Soldiers and Animaniacs. This was a huge home run, with broad applications. 

There are many examples of this type of cooperative relationship between hatcheries and the environmental or educational community. Some organizations like the Pennsylvania Steelhead Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the growth, enhancement and protection of Lake Erie cold water fisheries, operate a cooperative hatchery facility in conjunction with the S.O.N.S. (Save Our Native Species) of Lake Erie and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. They conduct programs similar to that described above. Some hatchery programs have taken the educational component even further by developing a web-based interactive game that uses a typical day in the hatchery to teach basic math and science skills and to demonstrate how those skills are important to fish hatchery operation (Colorado Division of Wildlife, 2011). 

In addition to remote controls, infrared-technology applications include peripheral connectivity for personal computers, night-vision systems, medical-imaging applications, military tracking systems, interactive game controllers, and saunas.

This book contains an important piece of that puzzle. David Freeman is one of the few people I know who has successfully bridged the emotionally rich world of linear media and story with the structurally demanding world of interactive games. He has found ways to utilize empathy as an emotional draw, even within the widely varying structures of games.

The objectives of the DVD-ROM are fourfold (I) to facilitate the learning of CRE by using the DVD-ROM to actively address the Felder/Solomon Inventory of Learning Styles discussed in Appendix H (2) to provide additional technical material (3) to provide tutorial information and self-assessment exercises and (4) to make the learning of CRE fun by using interactive games. The following components are listed at the end of most chapters and can be accessed from each chapter in (he DVD-ROM. 

As the reader plays these interactive games, they will be asked a number of questions related to the corresponding material in the textbook. The computer will keep track of all the correct answers and at the end of the game will display a coded peifomumce number that reflects how well the reader mastered the material in the text. Instructors will have a manual to decode the performance number.
