International Federation of Societies

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists, with individual memberships, was founded in the United States after World War II, based on the beHef that scientific expertise and exchange were the foundations for future expansion of the cosmetic industry. Prior to that time, knowledge of cosmetic formulation was jealously guarded. Related scientific societies emerged in other countries and have since joined to form the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists.

There are, at present, eleven operations research societies in different countries. There is also an International Federation of Operations Research Societies (IFORS). In addition to the journals published by these societies, a journal called International Abstracts in Operations Research has made its appearance.

This untiring activity led Professor Courtois to become involved with many international authorities where he worked at the highest level these included the International Unions of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and of Biochemistry, the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (of which he was the president from 1964 to 1968), the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (taking part in its foundation), and International Commissions of Nomenclature. In all these authorities, his experience, his common sense, and his characteristic optimism were greatly appreciated.

The close associations of cfinical chemistry and laboratory medicine have been evident in other public ways. Most journals in the field of clinical chemistry publish papers in all of the areas of laboratory medicine. The subtitle of the journal Clinical Chemistry even includes the term Laboratory Medicine. Moreover, the international association of clinical chemistry societies is now called the International Federation of Cfinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine.

She served as the president and forum chair for the Student Platform for Engineering Education Development (SPEED), which works to empower students around the globe to make improvements in engineering education systems themselves. She is currently on the executive committee of the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES) and the International Studies SIG in AERA.
