An international committee (ISO/TC45) deals with the standardisation of test methods for rubber and the standardisation of rubber product specifications. There is a parallel committee for plastics, materials and products ISO/TC61. Individual countries also have standard setting bodies such as BSI and ASTM.

The ballistic mortar test is considered to be the most satisfactory laboratory test for the measurement of the strength of an explosive. The design is based on the American company Du Ponfs design which was accepted as an international standard by the International Committee on Standardization of Tests on Explosives, Belgium in 1962. This has been described in detail by Taylor and Morris [85]. Ballistic Mortar (Du Pont Type) is used in the USA in preference to the Trauzl or lead block test which is considered to be a standard test in some European countries and is well known for research on explosives [86]. 

The studies are done according to a standardized OECD protocol and in compliance with good laboratory practices. Test results are reviewed by the responsible government entity within the country with lead responsibility. Dossiers are subsequently reviewed by an international committee of experts. 

Of the (then) 151 States Parties, 113 attended the RevCon. Also in attendance were two signatory States (Haiti and Israel) and two non-States Parties (Libya and Angola). In addition, 5 international organizations (the European Space Agency, the International Committee of the Red Cross [ICRC], the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research), 22 non-governmental organizations and 6 industry associations were approved to attend the RevCon. 

The laboratory plays a crucial role in the detection and characterization of the hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias discussed in the next sections. There have been several recommendations for the laboratory investigation of abnormal Hbs and thalassemias. For example, the 1978 International Committee for Standardization in Hematology expert panel on abnormal Hbs has prepared recommendations for the laboratory investigation of these conditions.In its initial investigation, (1) a complete blood count (CBC), (2) electrophoresis at pH 9.2, (3) tests for solubility and sickling. 

Realistic engine tests are only meaningful over field trials lasting 1 year, or more. But what is realistic - the variety of engine use is almost as varied as life itself. To address this, international committees have defined engine lubricant tests which are practical, relevant to use and reproducible under tightly defined conditions.
