Ignition tests

It is usually advisable to carry out the ignition test first. This will provide useful information as to the general properties of the compound and, in particular, the residue may be employed for the detection of any inorganic elements which may be present. 

Evidence of the organic nature of the substance may, be provided by the behaviour of the compound when heated on porcelain or platinum or other comparatively inert metal (e.g., nickel) the substance is inflammable, burns with a more or less smoky flame, chars and leaves a black residue consisting largely of carbon (compare Ignition Test above).

In a third ignitability test, UL-94, all substrates were rated V-1/5V or better by UL-94. 

Test results show that thin coatings (2-5 mils) can significantly effect the fire performance of plastic substrates. Most EMI coatings decrease ignitability test results. Coatings tend to level diverse flame spread and ease of extinction performance. A 2-mil coating can reduce the 1, value in ASTM E162 Radiant... 

This contains two ignitability tests one uses a glowing wire and one a needle flame. Setchkin ignition apparatus. Measures flash ignition and spontaneous ignition temperatures. Normal sample orientation horizontal. 

Simple Ignition Test. The proposed tests for combustible materials may need to be supplemented by a simple ignition test, involving contact of a small flame in the absence of any impressed irradiance. Some of these tests are already used in the Member States, in particular Germany and Italy (see Figure 6). Such a test could be used as an additional test or a screening test.

This principle is adhered to for flame ignition tests for the public area which still requires that the tests are carried out on the upholstery composite although some specifiers are now requiring that all PU foam shall additionally comply with the 1988 Consumer Safety Regulations. 

The Consumer Safety Regulations 1988 regulations were recently published for domestic furniture and mattresses. These are a complex series of relatively simple ignition tests designed to restrict the use of easily ignitable fabrics and infill materials. The 1988 regulations replace the earlier regulations of 1980 and 1983. 

FLAME IGNITION TEST FOR PILLOWS AND CUSHIONS WITH SOLID FILLINGS. This is carried out using ignition to BS 5852 Part 2, Source 2. Cushions are additionally covered with the specified FR polyester fabric (Table VII).
