International Committee

In June 1974, members of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, U.S.S.R., reported their discovery of Element 106, which they reported to have synthesized. Glenn Seaborg was part of this group, and the element was named in his honor. Seaborgium is often still referred to as Element 106 because the international committee in charge of names changed the rules. They decided retroactively it couldn t be named after a living person. 

The International Bureau of Weights and Measures, BIPM (Parc de Saint-Cloud, France) is described in Appendix X2 of Ref 4. This bureau operates under the exclusive supervision of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM).

In 1963 a classification of coals by rank (differing from the ECE scheme) was pubUshed by the International Committee for Coal Petrology (Table 2) (9). This includes a classification of brown coal that correlates a number of important properties including the percent reflectance of vitrinite in the coal. This is a simpler version of that used in German practice, which further subdivides soft brown coals into foHaceous and earthy. Most brown coals belong to the latter group.

In 1995, discussions among the United States, the European Community (EC), and Japan occurred to achieve harmonization of dmg and dmg product standards and to provide guidance to the worldwide pharmaceutical industry for acceptance of global regulatory filings. The International Committee on Harmonization (ICH) has proposed initial guidelines for the estabUshment of stabihty studies. 

Vimses contain either RNA or DNA, and this nucleic acid composition forms the basis for thek classification. Although vimses ate known to infect bactetia, insects, plants, animals, and humans, this discussion is restticted to the important vimses of vertebrates. The relevant vimses ate summarized in Table 2, using the nomenclature and taxonomy recommended by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Vimses (4,5). 

Whereas the foregoing ate the forms most commonly found in many appHcations in industry, there ate definitions that ate necessary not only for industrial purposes but also for consistency in the study of carbon science. Since 1975, the International Committee for Characterization and Terminology of Carbon has been working to estabUsh definitions and in 1982 pubHshed its 30 tentative definitions followed by periodic issues of further tentative definitions (10).

The diagnosis of PK deficiency depends on the determination of quantitative enzyme activity or qualitative abnormalities of the enzyme. In 1979, the International Committee for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH) established methods for the biochemical characterization of red blood cell PK variants (M22). Since the establishment of these methods, many PK-deficient cases have been characterized, including 13 cases of homozygous PK deficiency. Residual red blood cell PK activity is not usually associated with phenotypic severity,whereas enzymatic characteristics such as decreased substrate affinity, thermal instability, or impaired response to the allosteric activator fructose-1,6-diphosphate (F-1,6-DP) correspond to a more severe phenotype.

An international committee (ISO/TC45) deals with the standardisation of test methods for rubber and the standardisation of rubber product specifications. There is a parallel committee for plastics, materials and products ISO/TC61. Individual countries also have standard setting bodies such as BSI and ASTM.
