Desmosomes and Filaments. The cohesiveness and internal structure of SC cells are dependent on the structures that are called desmosomes (25, 26, 27). These structures unite SC cells of different layers (Figure 3) and of the same layer (Figures 4 and 5). The sequence of embryonic development is a thickening of opposed cell membranes followed by intercellular disc formation and intracellular formation of the attachment plate (25, 29). This sequence is blocked if normal protein production in rough endoplasmic reticulum is altered by virus activity (28). When complete, the desmosomes of basal cells sprout filaments from their attachment plates (25, 27, 30). These filaments become longer, thicker, and more numerous as cells differentiate and migrate toward the skin surface (31, 32). Filaments arise either from the attachment plate (27) or they form loops that are anchored there (26). The smallest filaments... [Pg.45]

Three blocks south of Evanston downtown is one of the state s oldest vegetarian restaurants. Although the decor of the Blind Faith Cafe (525 Dempster St., b 847-328-6875) is undeniably a throwback to the 1970s, its food is definitely not. A revolving menu starts with appetizers such as the cornmeal-crusted tofu cakes served with shaved onion in a red wine sauce. Unique international entrees are unusual additions to the Chicago culinary scene. Try the mu-shu-seasoned tempeh with zucchini, carrots, red peppers, baby corn and bean sprouts, served with plum sauce and Manda-... [Pg.124]

It is emphasized in John Heinerman s The Treatment of Cancer with Herbs (1984) that although laetrile is sometimes viewed favorably as a cancer treatment, due to enzymatic action it can interact with some other foods to produce HCN internally and cause cyanide poisoning. Specifically forbidden is using laetrile tablets with such health foods as nuts, bean and alfalfa sprouts, fresh fruits (peaches), and other uncooked foods found in salads (lettuce, celery, mushrooms), which are high in hydrolytic enzymes that can cause the release of cyanide (Heinerman, 1984, pp. 175,176). Never mix these foods with laetrile ... [Pg.160]

Vitamin K is needed primarily for the blood-clotting mechanism that prevents bleeding to death from cuts and wounds or internal bleeding. Vitamin K is found naturally in plants and can be produced by bacteria in the intestine. The best dietary sources are leafy green vegetables, such as spinach, sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower. Lower levels are found in liver, lean meat, cow milk, egg yolk and whole-wheat products. [Pg.369]
