Instrumentation improvement

Future trends will include studies of grain-dependent surface adsorption phenomena, such as gas-solid reactions and surface segregation. More frequent use of the element-specific CEELS version of REELM to complement SAM in probing the conduction-band density of states should occur. As commercially available SAM instruments improve their spot sizes, especially at low Eq with field emission sources, REELM will be possible at lateral resolutions approaching 10 nm without back scattered electron problems. [Pg.333]

HPLC separations are one of the most important fields in the preparative resolution of enantiomers. The instrumentation improvements and the increasing choice of commercially available chiral stationary phases (CSPs) are some of the main reasons for the present significance of chromatographic resolutions at large-scale by HPLC. Proof of this interest can be seen in several reviews, and many chapters have in the past few years dealt with preparative applications of HPLC in the resolution of chiral compounds [19-23]. However, liquid chromatography has the attribute of being a batch technique and therefore is not totally convenient for production-scale, where continuous techniques are preferred by far. [Pg.4]

In addition to instrumental improvements, various approaches have been used to improve the purity or geometry of sources of natural samples for gamma spectrometric measurement. For example, improvements in source preparation for " Th measurement in water and sediment samples by gamma spectrometry are discussed in Cochran and Masque (2003). It should be emphasized that one of the main advantages of gamma spectrometry is ease of use, since in many cases samples may be analyzed directly or with significantly reduced sample preparation compared to alpha, beta, or mass spectrometric techniques. [Pg.31]

One area of analytical chemistry which is currently developing rapidly is the automation of methods. Some degree of automation has been used for a number of years in instruments such as automatic burettes coupled to absorptiometric or electrometric end-point detectors, and in data output devices which provide continuous pen recording or signal integration facilities. The major features of recent developments include the scope for instrumental improvements provided by solid-state electronic circuits and the increasing application of digital computers (Chapter 13). [Pg.514]

C is present in 1.1% natural abundance and so approximately n% of a M (CO) complex is isotopically labelled. General infrared instrumental improvements have made studies on such natural-abundance species perfectly feasable, for most i>(CO) infrared peaks are rather narrow in hydrocarbon solvents. The commercial availability of 13 CO and C180 (substitution by either of which has very similar frequency perturbation consequences) has led to studies of isotopically enriched species. Perhaps because of the emphasis on studies of v(CO) vibrations, little work has been reported... [Pg.116]

Note Although resolution and mass accuracy are already high in broadband spectra (R = 3 x 10 -10, Am < 10 u), the performance of FT-ICR instruments improves by at least one order of magnitude by storing only narrow m/z ranges, because fewer ions in the cell mean less distortion by coulombic interactions. [Pg.169]

The strict regulations of the pharmaceutical industry have a significant effect on the quality control of final products, demanding the use of reliable and fast analytical methods. The capacity that the technique has for the simultaneous determination of several APIs with no need of, or with minimum, sample preparation has considerably increased its application in pharmaceutical analytical control. The main limitation of NIR is the relatively low sensitivity that limits the determination of APIs in preparations when their concentration is less than 0.1%. Nevertheless, instrumental improvements allow the determination below this limit depending on the nature of the analyte and the matrix, with comparable errors to the ones obtained with other instrumental techniques. The reference list presents an ample variety of analytical methodologies, types of samples, nature of analyte and calibration models. A detailed treatment of each one is beyond the scope of... [Pg.483]

Precise and accurate isotope analyses by mass spectrometry have attained growing importance in the last few years due to instrumental improvements with respect to sensitivity, detection limits, precision and accuracy.1 As mentioned before, because the isotope abundances of several elements are not constant and vary as a result of nuclear, biological, chemical, geochemical and physical processes, isotope ratio measurements are required for different research and application fields. Isotope ratio measurements are therefore necessary for elements with two or more isotopes for inves-... [Pg.225]

The optical rotatory dispersion spectrum of RNase has been measured many times. The details of its shape and the accessible wavelength range vary with the authors and with time as the instruments improve. The general outlines are now well recognized and some typical spectra... [Pg.719]

Identifying pharmaceuticals, whether APIs or excipients used to manufacture products, and the end products themselves is among the routine tests needed to control pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. Pharmacopoeias have compiled a wide range of analytical methods for the identification of pharmaceutical APIs and usually several tests for a product are recommended. The process can be labor-intensive and time-consuming with these conventional methods. This has raised the need for alternative, faster methods also ensuring reliable identification. Of the four spectroscopic techniques reviewed in this book, IR and Raman spectroscopy are suitable for the unequivocal identification of pharmaceuticals as their spectra are compound-specific no two compounds other than pairs of enantiomers or oligomers possess the same IR spectrum. However, IR spectrometry is confronted with some practical constraints such as the need to pretreat the sample. The introduction of substantial instrumental improvements and the spread of attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and IR microscopy techniques have considerably expanded the scope of IR spectroscopy in the pharmaceutical field. Raman spectroscopy,... [Pg.365]

In the remaining sections, specific examples of how this approach has led to instrument improvements are given. [Pg.37]

Further developments of the work include a more accurate study of the mechanisms of desulfurization processes using instrumental improvements. This will enable an easy quantitation of gas yield and a thermochemical approach of elemental processes. We also have been using model polymers to better study the interactions of pyrite and sulfur with the organic matrix during coal pyrolysis, oxidation and combustion (34 and to examine more accurately the specific role of organic sulfur in thermal degradation processes. [Pg.365]
