One laboratory had surprisingly few problems with its instrument air, which was supplied from a commercial compressor with no special equipment. This laboratory was on the second floor of a building, while the compressor was at ground level. The air was taken upstairs through a pipe much larger than would ordinarily be used for such service. Since the air velocity was therefore very low, the pipe acted like a rectifier column and sent most of the contaminants back to the compressor air tank. As noted from general experience, except for specific large inductive loads such as of furnace or rectifiers, the fundamental content of the load current is high compared to the individual harmonic contents. Filters have a time constant r = R x C which increases the damping of the measuring instrument. The time constant depends on the required attenuation and the interfering frequency, but not on the internal resistance of the measuring instrument. The time constants of the shielding filter are in the same range as those of the electrochemical polarization, so that errors in the off potential are increased. At high pressure experiments the reactor should be installed in a pressure cell. All check valves before it, and the filter with the flow controller after it, can be kept in the vented operating room.
