Sec. 396.11 used to require a copy of the last day s Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) be kept aboard the power unit of a commercial vehicle. Sec. 396.11 still exists, but this particular requirement (formerly Sec. 396.11(c)(3)) was eliminated three years ago. If your drivers are turning in daily DVIRs for each vehicle they operate, the DVIRs cover the required parts and accessories, critical defects are being corrected before the vehicle goes out again, and you are holding onto the DVIRs for at least three months, you are in compliance with the current DVIR requirements. [Pg.88]

Part 396 section (b) of the Code of Federal Regulations states that The report shall identify the motor vehicle and list any defect or deficiency discovered by or reported to the driver which would affect safety of operation of the motor vehicle or result in its mechanical breakdown. On two-driver operations, only one driver needs to sign the report, provided both drivers agree with the report of the defects or deficiencies. To ensure that vehicles are in a safe operating condition while driven, the driver should check the whole vehicle carefully, pretravel and posttrip. These pretravel and posttrip inspection reports are an important part of a PMR If something seems to be wrong with the vehicle, stop and check it out. Do not continue with the trip until you are satisfied it is safe to do so. [Pg.217]
