Innovative Railways

Furka railway tunnel. The outflow at the west portal amounts to 5400 L/min at 16 °C. The water is filtered and then piped to the nearby village Oberwald (canton Valais). There, an innovative system has been in use since 1991 (Rybach Wilhelm 1995) the tunnel water is piped to individual heat pumps, tailored to supply various types of buildings ( cold district heating ). A total of 177 apartments and a sports centre are heated, with an installed capacity of 960 kWt (some of the buildings seen on Fig. 8). [Pg.376]

The normalization committees and operators are satisfied with the low level of harm on railway networks. Significant failures are a precondition of innovation. [Pg.102]

Finally, in the area of fast train development, innovations in aerospace are taken up by modem railway authorities including composite rolling stock structures, seating and furnishings, and barrier and insulation fabrics. [Pg.341]

Our perspective will be illustrated by a case from the Norwegian railway system more specifically the Aasta accident in 2001. We start the discussion with a presentation of our analytical model. Thereafter follows a brief presentation and discussion of the case, before we conclude that incremental innovations in complex technological systems may encompass even greater risks than radical changes of the entire system. [Pg.344]

There was one important innovation that affected the railway system during the 1990 s The introduction and implementation of the Automatic Control system (ATC). This imphed a centrahzation of the surveillance of large parts of the entire railway system. The... [Pg.347]

What are the current trends and innovations First of all, demand for flame retardants will rise worldwide on account of stricter fire-safety levels. It will be spurred on inter alia by the harmonisation of fire protection requirements for products in the constmction industry and for railway rolling stock within Europe, as well as through the introduction and implementation of fire regulations in newly industrialised countries, especially in Asia, with particular focus on China. The 42V power supply in cars and UL94 V-0 television sets in Europe will similarly contribute towards this trend. Over the medium term, US fire safety requirements could be imposed on upholstered furniture in the private sphere throughout the entire country, which would ensure a boom in the demand for flame retardants. [Pg.15]

In particular, the sector should draw together current knowledge of major hazard events, failure histories of safety and environmental protection critical elements, and developments in new knowledge and innovation to continuously improve the control of risks. This should take advantage of the experience of other high hazard sectors such as chemical processing, offshore oil and gas operations, nuclear processing and railways. [Pg.64]

As said before, the use case provided by ASTS (Ansaldo STS) derives from CBTC, an automatic innovative system for the management of railway traffic in an urban area. It is particularly used for metropolitan projects with the aim to overcome the limitations of conventional fixed-block systems optimizing the transportation levels and ensuring safety and shortest headways in the newest Rapid Transit Metro systems. [Pg.138]

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) http //www.asme.org/ (accessed September 13, 2010). ASME s Rail Transportation Division (RTD) focuses on intercity freight and passenger railroads as well as rail rapid transit. RTD is a partner in the annual lEEE/ASME Joint Rail Conference, which focuses on innovation in railway mechanical and electrical engineering. [Pg.524]

In this chapter, the author depicted the experience and findings related to an apphcation of some of the existing methodologies on fonr vety different railway projects as well as the background to, and results of, the implementation of several innovative methodologies that the author developed whilst working on these projects. [Pg.132]

Traffic Safety, Volume 4 of the Research for Innovative Transports Set, presents a collection of updated papers from the TRA 2014 Conference, highlighting the diversity of research in this field. Theoretical chapters and practical case studies address topics such as road safety management and policies, accident analysis and modeling, vulnerable road users safety, road infrastructure safety, ITS and railway safety. [Pg.391]

The principle of the automatic reset is an innovative solution in the field of railway safety automata. This is an example of the implemented principle, defined at the upstream phase of the project, which enables improvement of the overall system characteristics ... [Pg.139]

Wheeled vehicles—carts, wagons, trains, and later trucks and automobiles—and ships, of course, made relatively fast work of transporting materials from the mine to the factory, and then to the consumer. Aside from enabling a massive increase in metal production— particularly lead, iron and steel— the Industrial Revolution also saw innovations in chemistry, gas utilities and Ughting, cement, glass, paper, transportation infrastructure (such as railways), and mining. [Pg.9]
