So far we have treated the optical properties of dielectrics as if they were perfect insulators. However, as seen in Qiapter 23, there are several mechanisms by which some small electrical conduction can take place. Consequently, as will be shown in the next section, the small but finite conduction will result in some losses in optical transmission. [Pg.475]


It has been assumed that desensitization by spectral sensitizers occurs to an equal degree in the regions of inherent absorption by the silver halide and absorption by the dye, but data on the effects of oxygen and moisture in these two absorption regions show that the degree of desensitization can be different under some conditions. The effect of the environment on the relative quantum efficiency of some dyes can depend on whether the dye is in the monomeric or aggregated state (266). This is illustrated in Table A. [Pg.395]

The key to effectiveness of these compounds is intramolecular hydrogen bonding and their tautomeric characteristics upon absorption of UV radiation. Plasticizers. Plasticizers are materials that soften and flexibilize inherently rigid, and even britde polymers. Organic esters are widely used as plasticizers in polymers (97,98). These esters include the benzoats, phthalates, terephthalates, and trimeUitates, and aUphatic dibasic acid esters. Eor example, triethylene glycol bis(2-ethylbutyrate) [95-08-9] is a plasticizer for poly(vinyl butyral) [63148-65-2] which is used in laminated safety glass (see Vinyl POLYMERS, poly(vinyl acetals)). Di(2-ethyUiexyl)phthalate [117-81-7] (DOP) is a preeminent plasticizer. Variation of acid and/or alcohol component(s) modifies the efficacy of the resultant ester as a plasticizer. In phthalate plasticizers, molecular sizes of the alcohol moiety can be varied from methyl to tridecyl to control permanence, compatibiUty, and efficiency branched (eg, 2-ethylhexyl, isodecyl) for rapid absorption and fusion linear (C6—Cll) for low temperature flexibiUty and low volatility and aromatic (benzyl) for solvating. Terephthalates are recognized for their migration resistance, and trimeUitates for their low volatility in plasticizer appHcations. [Pg.396]

Wetted-waU or falhng-film columns have found application in mass-transfer problems when high-heat-transfer-rate requirements are concomitant with the absorption process. Large areas of open surface are available for heat transfer for a given rate of mass transfer in this type of equipment because of the low mass-transfer rate inherent in wetted-waU equipment. On the basis of data obtained the possibility of substrates distribution and their D-values prediction using the regressions which consider the hydrophobicity and stmcture of amines was investigated. The hydrophobicity of amines was estimated by the distribution coefficient value in the water-octanole system (Ig P). The molecular structure of aromatic amines was characterized by the first-order molecular connectivity indexes ( x)- H was shown the independent and cooperative influence of the Ig P and parameters of amines on their distribution. Evidently, this fact demonstrates the host-guest phenomenon which is inherent to the organized media. The obtained in the research data were used for optimization of the conditions of micellar-extraction preconcentrating of metal ions with amines into the NS-rich phase with the following determination by atomic-absorption method. [Pg.276]

Fillers. Fillers are not commonly added to CR adhesives. Calcium carbonate or clay can be primarily added to reduce cost in high-solids CR mastics. Maximum bond strength is obtained using fillers with low particle size (lower than 5 [jim) and intermediate oil absorption (30 g/100 g filler). In general, fillers reduce the specific adhesion and cohesion strength of adhesive films. The moisture content of a plastic affects such conditions as electrical insulation resistance, dielectric losses, mechanical properties, dimensions, and appearances. The effect on the properties due to moisture content depends largely on the type of exposure (by immersion in water or by exposure to high humidity), the shape of the product, and the inherent behavior properties of the plastic material. The ultimate proof for tolerance of moisture in a product has to be a product test under extreme conditions of usage in which critical dimensions and needed properties are verified. Plastics with very low water-moisture absorption rates tend to have better dimensional stability. [Pg.306]
