Finally, several other metal-substituted zinc metalloprotein derivatives have been prepared, including those of VO, Fe(II), Co(III), Pt(II), and HgCl2. Mossbauer spectroscopy can be used for in situ study of electrodes containing nuclei capable of resonance absorption of y radiation for practical systems, primarily the 57Fe isotope is used (passivation layers on iron electrodes, adsorbed iron complexes, etc.). It yields valuable information on the electron density on the iron atom, on the composition and symmetry of the coordination sphere around the iron atom and on its oxidation state. 

The older modular simulation mode, on the other hand, is more common in commerical applications. Here process equations are organized within their particular unit operation. Solution methods that apply to a particular unit operation solve the unit model and pass the resulting stream information to the next unit. Thus, the unit operation represents a procedure or module in the overall flowsheet calculation. These calculations continue from unit to unit, with recycle streams in the process updated and converged with new unit information. Consequently, the flow of information in the simulation systems is often analogous to the flow of material in the actual process. Unlike equation-oriented simulators, modular simulators solve smaller sets of equations, and the solution procedure can be tailored for the particular unit operation. However, because the equations are embedded within procedures, it becomes difficult to provide problem specifications where the information flow does not parallel that of the flowsheet. The earliest modular simulators (the sequential modular type) accommodated these specifications, as well as complex recycle loops, through inefficient iterative procedures. The more recent simultaneous modular simulators now have efficient convergence capabilities for handling multiple recycles and nonconventional problem specifications in a coordinated manner. 

Local chemical composition from areas less than 1 nm in diameter can be measured by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) or electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Such spectroscopic information may be presented in 2D maps showing the spatial element distribution in the specimen (13). Furthermore, information about the local density of unoccupied electron states of a specific element can be extracted from EELS data and used to estimate the oxidation state and the local coordination geometry of the excited atoms (14). In some favorable cases, electronic structure information with a resolution of about 1 eV from individual atomic columns has been attained (15,16). Recent developments of monochromators and spectrometers have brought the resolution down to 0.1 eV (17,18), and this capability may offer new opportunities to determine relationships between electronic structure information, the atomic arrangements and the catalytic activities of solids. 

Coordinate Representation. A coordinate representation of a chemical substance is a recording of the atoms and bonds of that substance with an indication of their relative position in a plane. This coordinate representation provides a valuable form to facilitate on-line, real-time manipulation of the structure diagram and to store the diagram for subsequent composition in journals, handbooks, and search output. Because this representation is difficult to manipulate, it is typically converted to some other form for other information system functions. Farmer and Schehr [11] describe the approaches and capabilities used at CAS for representing and processing a coordinate form of structure diagrams. 

In general, SCM requires two key components first, functional excellence in the materials and information flows along the entire value chain from the supplier to the customer, and second, overarching capabilities in cross-functional planning and execution so that all parties involved take consistent and coordinated actions. 

Overall, firms have had to coordinate planning submissions across cross-functional teams working together to ensure that information presented in the application is reflective of company practice at the time of the submission. This has created the need for professionals with both regulatory and technical skills. These professionals need to be ready for change, have an awareness of future direction of legislation affecting products, and have the capability to work proactively with the FDA.
