Newer agents of this class are famciclovir and cidofovir. Famciclovir is a prodrug of penciclovir with improved oral bioavailability. It is labelled for the suppression of recurrent episodes of genital herpes in immunocompetent adults and for the treatment of recurrent mucocutaneous herpes simplex infections in HIV-infected patients. [Pg.420]

The initial signs of disease may become apparent at any time during the evolution of HIV infection. In HIV-infected patients TBC may be pulmonary or extra-pulmonary. Pulmonary TBC is still the most common form of TBC. The presentation depends on the degree of immunosuppression. In advanced HIV... [Pg.564]

A multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled study showed oral valacyclovir (500 mg, twice daily) effective for the suppression of recurrent genital HSV infections in HIV-infected participants (Dejesus et al.). [Pg.199]

In a study of oral famciclovir versus oral aciclovir, designed to demonstrate equivalence of efficacy of the two drugs in the treatment of mucocutaneous Herpes simplex infection in HIV-infected individuals, there was no difference in the incidence or nature of adverse effects in the two groups (1). None of the withdrawals from the trial was considered by the investigator to be related to the study medication. [Pg.1326]

Until recently, a rapid presumptive identification of C. albicans could be made by incubation of the organism in serum formation of a germ tube (the beginning of hyphae, which arise as perpendicular extensions from the yeast cell, with no constriction at their point of origin) within 1 to 2 hours offered a positive identification of C. albicans. Unformnately, C. dubliniensis, a new species of Candida that was identified recently as an important cause of mucosal colonization and infection in HIV-infected individuals, also can produce a germ mbe. A negative germ tube test does not rule out the possibility of C. albicans, but further biochemical tests must be performed to differentiate between other non-albicans species. ... [Pg.2178]

Rifabutin is effective for the prevention of MAC infection in HIV-infected individuals. At a dose of 3(X) mg per day, rifabutin decreased the frequency of MAC bacteremia (2%). However, azithromycin or clarithromycin are more effective and less likely to interact with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) drugs. Rifabutin also is commonly substituted for rifampin in the treatment of tuberculosis in HIV-infected patients, as it has a less profound CYP-dependent interaction with indinavir and nelfinavir. Rifabutin also is used in combination with clarithromycin and ethambutol for the therapy of MAC disease. [Pg.620]

The lung is a frequent site of opportunistic infection in HIV-infected individuals, and pulmonary infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality (108,109). [Pg.179]

HBV infection in HIV-infected persons is more likely to lead to chronic HBV infection. HIV infection also can impair the response to hepatitis B vaccine. Therefore, HIV-infected persons who are vaccinated should be tested for hepatitis B surface antibody 1-2 months after the third vaccine dose. Revaccination with three more doses should be considered for those who do not respond initially to vaccination. Those who do not respond to additional doses should be advised that they might remain susceptible to HBV infection. [Pg.416]
