Infection case study

The examination of individual NP case studies by other investigators, as well as summary results of our pilot research, suggest at least two clinically distinct populations. One subsample of PCP abusers has a developmental history of prenatal and birth complications, e.g., prematurity, anoxia at birth, or low APGAR scores, and of early childhood factors, e.g., CHI with loss of consciousness, febrile illnesses with or without convulsions, or chronic ear infections. These histories contribute to developmental learning and performance disorders. In this group, LD causes academic failure and frustrations, which in turn contribute to the development of psychological and interpersonal problems. [Pg.206]

Progress in defining new treatments for C. difficile infection has been hindered by the heterogeneous nature of hospital-acquired diarrhea, and in particular by whether colitis and/or pseudomembranous colitis is present in individual cases. Study groups have usually been poorly defined in this context, and given the spontaneous resolution of symptoms in a proportion of cases the true efficacy of treatment approaches often remains uncertain. Enthusiasm to explore new treatment possibilities for C. difficile has been largely fuelled by the apparently high relapse rate of conventional (metronidazole or vancomycin) treatment [138],... [Pg.50]

Only one report of human death attributed to 1,4-dichlorobenzene exposure has been located in the literature. A 60-year-old man and his wife died within months of each other due to acute yellow atrophy of the liver (also known as massive hepatic necrosis or fulminant hepatitis) (Cotter 1953). Their home had been "saturated" with 1,4-dichlorobenzene mothball vapor for a period of about 3-4 months, but no air measurements were available. Clinical symptoms included severe headache, diarrhea, numbness, clumsiness, slurred speech, weight loss (50 pounds in 3 months in the case of the husband), and jaundice. The wife died within a year of the initial exposure however, it was not clear if 1,4-dichlorobenzene was the primary cause of death. This case study did not address whether these individuals consumed excessive amounts of alcohol or had previous medical problems, such as a chronic liver infection. [Pg.33]

Levamisole was first synthesized for the treatment of parasitic infections. Later studies suggested that it increases the magnitude of delayed hypersensitivity or T cell-mediated immunity in humans. In immunodeficiency associated with Hodgkin s disease, levamisole has been noted to increase the number of T cells in vitro and to enhance skin test reactivity. Levamisole has also been widely tested in rheumatoid arthritis and found to have some efficacy. However, it has induced severe agranulocytosis (mainly in HLA-B27-positive patients), which required discontinuation of its use. The drug may also potentiate the action of fluorouracil (5-FU) in adjuvant therapy of colorectal cancer, and this combination has been approved for clinical use in the treatment of Dukes class C colorectal cancer after surgery. Its use in these cases reduces recurrences, and the mechanism... [Pg.1354]
