Industrial success factor

When thinking about the workshop organizer s request to give an industrial overview and to cover the trends in innovation—barriers, key success factors, and the like—I came to several conclusions. First, I wanted to help set the stage for the talks and discussions later today and tomorrow, while at the same time I wanted to be complimentary to the following talks without needless duplication. 

To do this, I decided to use both industry information and specific information from the Dow Chemical Company to illustrate what I see happening in the broader chemical industry. I ll start with some broad trend data on chemical patents and, thus, on innovation in the chemical sciences. Next, I ve selected three macrotrends occurring in the chemical industry to speak about, and I ll finish with three critical innovation success factors that I call the three P s—people, processes, and partnerships. 

Chemical products can be roughly segmented into basic chemicals, polymers, specialty and performance products, industrial gases, and agrochemicals. However, for practical purposes they are usually classified as commodities and specialties , the latter having higher value added and distinctive key success factors that allow for some additional differentiation between competing products. Albeit this distinction is commonplace in the industry, it should be kept in mind that chemical commodities are not nearly as commoditized as true commodities such... 

Foundation In this era the chemical industry was putting down its roots. As the industrial revolution had created demand for many chemical products such as dyestuffs, this period was characterized by the discovery of new molecules, based for the most part on different types of hydrocarbons. In addition to R D, access to raw materials was the key success factor. With the development of the coal industry in the nineteenth century discoveries were plentiful. This was the starting point of many national chemical companies which still exist today as global players. Production during this period, however, was small-scale and fragmented. 

To do this, they have to meet all the key success factors for traditional efficient service in local markets while at the same time leaping to the next industry S-curve and becoming strategic partners for the chemical industry and for chemical-consuming customers. 

While local dynamics will always remain vital to the profitability of chemical distributors, strategic partnerships with suppliers and customers will play an increasing role in their performance. To ensure substantial value growth, specific key success factors must be fulfilled to enable distributors to leap to the next industry S-curve as partners of the chemical industry and chemical-consuming manufacturers. 

Currently in development is a follow-on tool that assists a corporation in a more complete stakeholder mapping process that assigns stakeholder partners to roles within each stakeholder category, identifies top stakeholders in each area, and collates those to key success factors for a particular business and industry. Caco-2 cell monolayers or other cell lines as well as intrinsic clearance determination (half-lives) for structure/stability evaluation. The overall strategy for the industry is to use this screening tool as efficiently as possible, and not necessarily for all compounds in the chemical library. The standardised systems have a high throughput where thousands of chemical compounds can be tested in a short period of time and where the time for feedback into the projects is the most important success factor. Because of the importance of the measured values resulting from such assays for a forthcoming candidate drug selection, the importance of the assay for correct prediction of the human situation becomes evident.

ABSTRACT The industry s need for improvement is intensifying. To be able to measure the effect of improvement processes, the companies need to develop and implement Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Implemented KPIs must reflect the critical success factors in the company. To utilize the power of KPIs, the KPIs must be communicated to the employees.
