Industrial production acid composition

Starch is a polysaccharide found in many plant species. Com and potatoes are two common sources of industrial starch. The composition of starch varies somewhat in terms of the amount of branching of the polymer chains (11). Its principal use as a flocculant is in the Bayer process for extracting aluminum from bauxite ore. The digestion of bauxite in sodium hydroxide solution produces a suspension of finely divided iron minerals and siUcates, called red mud, in a highly alkaline Hquor. Starch is used to settle the red mud so that relatively pure alumina can be produced from the clarified Hquor. It has been largely replaced by acryHc acid and acrylamide-based (11,12) polymers, although a number of plants stiH add some starch in addition to synthetic polymers to reduce the level of residual suspended soHds in the Hquor. Starch [9005-25-8] can be modified with various reagents to produce semisynthetic polymers. The principal one of these is cationic starch, which is used as a retention aid in paper production as a component of a dual system (13,14) or a microparticle system (15). 

The surface of a solid may differ in many ways from its bulk composition. Especially, such solids as commercial carbon black may contain minor amounts of impurities (such as aromatics, phenol, carboxylic acid). This would render surface adsorption characteristics different from that of pure carbon. It is therefore essential that, in industrial production, quality control of the surface from different production batch is maintained. Otherwise, the surface properties will affect the application. The phenolic composition of apple consists of cinnamic acids, flavonols, dihydrochalcones, and flavan-3-ols (50,56). In the apple fruit processing industry, hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives and flavan-3-ols are important due to their contribution to the astringency, haze, and browning in apple juice and cider. Chlorogenic acid represents the major hydroxycinnamic acid derivative. The flavan-3-ols (catechins) are present in the monomeric form as well as in oligomeric and polymeric forms (procyanidins) in apple and apple products (56). 

The whey produced during cheese and casein manufacturing contains approximately 20% of all milk proteins. It represents a rich and varied mixture of secreted proteins with wide-ranging chemical, physical and functional properties (Smithers et al., 1996). Due to their beneficial functional properties, whey proteins are used as ingredients in many industrial food products (Cheftel and Lorient, 1982). According to Kinsella and Whitehead (1989), functional properties of foods can be explained by the relation of the intrinsic properties of the proteins (amino acid composition and disposition, flexibility, net charge, molecular size, conformation, hydrophobicity, etc.), and various extrinsic factors (method of preparation and storage, temperature, pH, modification process, etc.). 

Coconut oil from the coconut palm Cocus nuciferd) is one of two important lauric oils (see also pahn-kemel oil. Section 5.10). Annual production exceeds 3 million tons and comes mainly from Indonesia and the Philippines (Section 10). It is characterized by its high level of lauric acid (12 0) accompanied by the 8 0-14 0 acids. A detailed fatty acid composition of this oil is given in Table 2(b). The oil is used in the food industry and in the nonfood industry. In the latter case, it is used mainly as derivatives of the corresponding alcohols (dodecanol or coco alcohol).

Coconut oil is one of the most important raw materials for the oleochemical industry. The whole range of its fatty acid composition is used as the starting material for a wide variety of oleochemical products. Fatty acids are the building blocks that, with proper selection and application of oleochemistry, are converted to higher valued products. 

The principal oxygen compounds are phenols and naphthenic acids. These are present only in particular crude oils in significant amounts. By-product petroleum phenols have been industrial products ih America since the 1930 s, but the literature on their composition is limited. Naphthenic acids were found in considerable quantities in the early days of the oil industry in crude oils from Roumania and from Russia. These have, therefore, been worked upon in Europe before the first world war this work is associated with the name of von Braun. 

As a rule, the most widespread liquid environments are water solutions of acids, alkalis, and salts. Chemical resistance of RubCon was specified as a change in weight and compressive strength of the samples after their exposure to aggressive liquid environments during a certain period of time. The choice of aggressive environment compositions was based on their prevalence in industrial production.
