Industrial polyester

Polyester polyols account for only ca. 10% of the total polyol market, which is dominated by polyether polyols such as hydroxy-terminated polyoxyethylene or polyoxypropylene. Polyester polyols are preferred for applications where better mechanical properties, wear resistance, and UV stability are required. The largest application of polyester polyols is flexible specialty polyurethane foam in the furniture, packaging, and automotive industries. Polyester polyols are also used for nonfoam applications such as coatings, paints, sealants, and adhesives 47... [Pg.29]

Esters, which contain the C 0 C functional group, have many uses in medicine, industry, and living systems. In medicine, a number of important pharmaceutical agents, including aspirin and the local anesthetic benzocaine, are esters. In industry, polyesters such as Dacron and Mylar are used to make synthetic fibers and films. In nature, many simple esters are responsible for the fragrant odors of fruits and flowers. For example, pentyl acetate is found in bananas, and octyl acetate is found in oranges. [Pg.1013]

In 1999, U.S. consumption of ethylene glycol totaled 5.5 billion lb. Of that, 1.5 billion lb (28%) was used in the production of polyester bottles, primarily for soft drinks. Polyester fiber applications accounted for 1.4 billion lb (26%), primarily for the textile industry. Polyester film and miscellaneous applications consumed another 0.4 billion lb (7%). Antifreeze applications have held steady at approximately 1.6 billion lb over the last 20 years, and have become relatively less important with time than the polyester applications. This trend is expected to hold in the future. Increased demand for polyester bottles is expected to fuel growth in the United States, and bottle and textile applications are expected to fuel growth in other areas of the world. [Pg.357]

In the form of synthetic fibres, its major use is in carpet yarns and in textiles, as woven polyester fabrics used in the home furnishings such as bed and table sheets, curtains and draperies. Industrial polyesters are used in tyre reinforcement, ropes and fabrics for conveyor and safety belts. [Pg.250]

Polyester made from terephthalic acid and monoethylene glycol is one of the largest products of the petrochemical industry. Polyester fiber has main outlets in wash-and-wear and drip-dry fabrics. These fabrics do not require ironing. A popular fabric is a 40 60 cotton-polyester blend that has similar advantages in addition to... [Pg.67]

In connection with that the stabilization considered as objects aromatic the block-copolyesters are only laboratoiy development was of interest to study, as the compounds of five-valent phosphorus received during researches will influence physical and chemical properties of industrial polyesters. As one of such polymers we choose a polycarbonate on a basis bisphenol A marks of the PC-3. It is established, that phosphinic the acid at her introduction in a polycarbonate does not render such appreciable strengthening influence on mechanical the characteristic of polymer as it took place in case of compositions on a basis the block-copolyesters. [Pg.125]

In the coating industry, polyesters are characterized by resins based on components that introduce unsaturation (—C=C—) directly into the polymer backbone. The most common polyester resins are polymerization products of maleic or isophthalic anhydride or their acids. In producing paint the polyester resin is dissolved in styrene monomer, together with pigment and small amounts of inhibitor. A free radical initiator, commonly a peroxide, and additional styrene are packaged in another container. When applied, the containers are mixed. Sometimes, because of the fast initiating reaction (short pot life) they are mixed in an... [Pg.335]

Alkyd resins are prepared from polyhydric alcohols (three or more hydroxyls), polybasic acids, and monobasic fatty acids (saturated and unsaturated) [1]. They are soluble in hydrocarbon solvents and are used in the coating industry. Polyesters prepared from dihydric alcohols are not included in the area of alkyd resins in this chapter and have been described in Vol. I of this series [2]. [Pg.157]

In general, commercial polyether polyols are limited in monomer composition to propylene oxide, ethylene oxide, butylene oxide and tetrahydrofuran. Industrial polyester polyols, many of which are the condensation products of organic acids and alcohols, may be prepared by a great many more combinations of monomers, and thus add to the potential versatility of polyurethane products. The commonest are based on adipamides ... [Pg.39]
