Polyester applications

Biaryl derivatives bearing reactive groups have become increasingly important in industry. Uses for this class of compounds are constantly being developed in the production of high performance polymers. Materials such as 3,3, 4,4 -biphenyl-tetracarboxylic dianhydride 1 and 4,4 -biphenol 2 are monomers employed in the manufacture of high performance polyimides or polyesters. Applications for this family of molecules have also been found both in the dye industry and in the pharmaceutical industry. [Pg.217]

Stabaxol P is used normally as a hydrolysis stabilizer in non-food polyester applications. One of the main applications is the stabilization of monofilament. An additional advantage of Stabaxol P is that it also works as a viscosity modifier. Stabaxol P has no FDA approval, and this means that it can be used only for technical applications. [Pg.524]

Most of the compounds in this group are used for the brightening of synthetic fibres, especially polyester. Application to polyester is either by exhaustion at 125-30 °C, with or without carriers, or by continuous pad bake methods at 160-200 °C with FBAs of a larger molecular size. The benzoxazole group is an important feature of this class, other examples being (3.59) and the bis(benzoxa-zolyl)stilbene (3.60), which is used to produce pre-brightened polyester by adding to the melt prior to extrusion of the fibre. [Pg.191]

Vinyltoluene. Vinyltoluene (VT) is a mixture of meta- and para-vinyltoluenes, typically in the ratio of 60 40. This isomer ratio results from the ratio of the corresponding ethyltoluenes in thermodynamic equilibrium. Vinyltoluene is produced for special applications. Its copolymers are more heat-resistant than the corresponding styrene copolymers, and it is used as a specialty monomer for paint, varnish, and polyester applications. [Pg.1556]

In 1999, U.S. consumption of ethylene glycol totaled 5.5 billion lb. Of that, 1.5 billion lb (28%) was used in the production of polyester bottles, primarily for soft drinks. Polyester fiber applications accounted for 1.4 billion lb (26%), primarily for the textile industry. Polyester film and miscellaneous applications consumed another 0.4 billion lb (7%). Antifreeze applications have held steady at approximately 1.6 billion lb over the last 20 years, and have become relatively less important with time than the polyester applications. This trend is expected to hold in the future. Increased demand for polyester bottles is expected to fuel growth in the United States, and bottle and textile applications are expected to fuel growth in other areas of the world. [Pg.357]

Description The common method for the production of DMT from p-xylene and methanol consists of four major steps oxidation, esterification, distillation and crystallization. A mixture of paraxylene (PX) and PT-ester is oxidized with air in the presence of a heavy metal catalyst. All useful organics are recovered from the offgas and recycled to the system. The acid mixture resulting from the oxidation is esterified with methanol to produce a mixture of esters. The crude ester mixture is distilled to remove all the heavy boilers and residue produced the lighter esters are recycled to the oxidation section. The raw DMT is then sent to the crystallization section for removal of DMT isomers and aromatic aldehydes. This purification produces DMT that meets world-market specifications and is preferred in some polyester applications. Byproducts are recovered for sale or burned for fuel value, and usable intermediate materials are recycled. [Pg.106]
