Chlorogenic acid forms a 1 1 complex with caffeine, which can be crystallized from aqueous alcohol and yields very little free caffeine on extraction with chloroform. Other compounds with which caffeine will complex in this way include isoeugenol, coumarin, indole-acetic acid, and anthocyanidin. The basis for this selection was the requirement for a substituted aromatic ring and a conjugated double bond in forming such a complex. This kind of complex does modify the physiological effects of caffeine.14 Complex formation will also increase the apparent aqueous solubility of caffeine in the presence of alkali benzoates, cinnamates, citrates, and salicylates.9... 

The role of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) has also been extensively studied in depressed patients. Whereas the overall psycho-physiological effects of noradrenaline in the CNS appear to be linked to drive and motivation, 5-HT is primarily involved in the expression of mood. It is not surprising therefore to find that the serotonergic system is abnormal in depression. This is indicated by a reduction in the main 5-HT metabolite, 5-hydroxy indole acetic acid (5-HIAA), in the cerebrospinal fluid of severely depressed patients and a reduction in 5-HT and 5-HIAA in the limbic regions of the brain of suicide victims. The 5-HT receptor function also appears to be abnormal in depression. This is indicated by an increase in the density of cortical 5-HT2a receptors in the brains of suicide victims and also on the platelet membrane of depressed patients. Platelets may be considered as accessible models of the nerve terminal. 

It is indole acetic acid derivative possessing potent antiinflammatory property and having a good analgesic and antipyretic action also. Mechanism of action is same as other NSAIDs.

An additional insight into the importance of specific media components on production of secondary products can be gained by examining the case history of shikonin production. It had been shown that callus cultures of Lithospermum erythrorhizon could be induced to produce shikonin on Linsmaier-Skoog medium supplemented with lpM indole acetic acid (IAA) and lOpM kinetin (KIN) (52). The effects of specific nutritional components of the tissue culture medium on growth of the cell cultures and production of shikonin were also investigated i53). Fujita et al. (54,55) found that the levels of NO,, Cu+, and SO had profound effects of shikonin biosynthesis. Optimal concentrations were identified for each ion (I 8 ) as well as optimal levels of key organic components. The resultant medium supported production of shikonin at a rate approximately 13 times that obtained on previous media formulations.

Similarly, nicotinamide was shown to form co-crystals with dodecanoic acid and indole acetic acid, and iso-nicotinamide with phloroglocinol and hydroquinone (Figure 7.7) [14b, c, e]. All these structures contain synthon I. The -COOH or -OH groups interact with the pyridine moiety and also with the second N-H group of amide which is not a part of synthon I. All these structures indicate that the acid-pyridine synthon is favoured over amide-acid according to the hierarchy of the interactions. 

Another important factor of hormone-hormone interaction is the hormonal control of hormonal movement and polarity. Thus, various cytokinins have been reported to increase the polar movement of indole acetic acid and vice versa. Gibberellin treatment was shown also under cer- bain circumstances to increase the basipetal auxin movement. On the other hand, abscisic acid decreases the auxin movement and ethylene, according to some evidence, the gibberellin movement, perhaps through a promotion of conjugation of the auxins with aspartate and of the gibberellins with glucose (cf. Eef. 27). 

Tryptamine (1) appears to be a precursor of the plant growth hormone lAA (indole acetic acid) (2) (Fig. 28.4). This compound also is produced in the metathoracic glands of the leafcutter ant, Atta sexdens, and is a factor in the ant s culture of fungi on fresh leaf material. Peltola and Leppanen found that the 24 hr excretion of 5-hydroxy-indole acetic acid lay within the normal range in patients with neurocirculatory disturbance.
