Morphology index

These observations indicate that synthesis of AdoMet in African trypanosomes is unregulated as compared to the mammalian host and that trypanosomes may therefore be more sensitive to imbalances in the AdoMet AdoHcy ratio (methylation index). Morphological alterations (long slender to stumpy transformation) in African... [Pg.125]

Optical Properties. The index of refraction of a deposited material is sensitive to the film density. A lower index of refraction is found at less than bulk densities. The reflectance of a metallic surface is affected by the growth morphology of the film. [Pg.529]

For thin-film samples, abrupt changes in refractive indices at interfrees give rise to several complicated multiple reflection effects. Baselines become distorted into complex, sinusoidal, fringing patterns, and the intensities of absorption bands can be distorted by multiple reflections of the probe beam. These artifacts are difficult to model realistically and at present are probably the greatest limiters for quantitative work in thin films. Note, however, that these interferences are functions of the complex refractive index, thickness, and morphology of the layers. Thus, properly analyzed, useful information beyond that of chemical bonding potentially may be extracted from the FTIR speara. [Pg.425]

This statement can be proved very easily by considering four different types of general POP properties and their variability as a function of the side substituents on the polymer skeleton, i.e. glass transition temperature (Tg), morphology, solvent solubility and limiting oxygen index (LOI). The values of these parameters are reported in Tables 5-8. [Pg.188]

The expansion index [51,102,103], defined as the ratio of cell fresh weight to dry weight evaluated at the time of maximum fresh weight, is a more qualitative indicator of changes in cell/aggregate size, under various cultivation conditions. Wongsamuth and Doran [58] identified the filtration characteristics of suspensions of Atropa belladonna, specifically cake permeability, which is at least partially related to morphology, as a useful indicator of shear effects. [Pg.149]

X-ray diffraction patterns were recorded on a Philips PW1820 diffractometer with Cu-Ka radiation (X = 0.154 nm). The collected sample was indexed very well as cubic a-Mn203 bixbyite (JCPDS 41-1442, la-3, a = 0.941 nm) (Fig. 1). The morphologies were visualized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (Fig. 1). The abundant well-defined hexagonal-like plates with the sizes from several hundred nanometers to a few micrometers were formed during hydrothermal treatment, which kept initial shape after 700 °C-calcination (Fig. 1). The hexagonal plates are about 50 nm thick with smooth surfaces. [Pg.246]

The underpotential deposition (UPD) of metals on foreign metal substrates is of importance in understanding the first phase of metal electrodeposition and also as a means for preparing electrode surfaces with interesting electronic and morphological properties for electrocatalytic studies. The UPD of metals on polycrystalline substrates exhibit quite complex behavior with multiple peaks in the linear sweep voltammetry curves. This behavior is at least partially due to the presence of various low and high index planes on the polycrystalline surface. The formation of various ordered overlayers on particular single crystal surface planes may also contribute to the complex peak structure in the voltammetry curves. [Pg.141]

Fig. 5 Schematic plot showing reported crystallization temperatures for PEO in the bulk and as a component of block copolymers of varying compositions. The morphology of the PEO block is indicated on the x-axis. The filled bars are for data where isothermal crystallization measurements were performed and Avrami indexes of 1 or less were reported. The horizontal lines indicate the maximum temperature range that can be associated with PEO homogeneous nucleation, see text... At 24 hours, a strong decrease in the number of topi-positive cells and in topi staining intensity appeared in tumors treated with irinotecan, whereas there was almost complete disappearance of topi staining in tumors treated with edotecarin (Figure 11D). Morphologic analysis of treated samples show absence of mitotic figures after both treatments (mitotic index 2% in controls, 0% in treated samples data not shown). [Pg.90]

Unfortunately, the X-ray diffraction patterns for different UZM-5 preparations showed broad peaks (due to the very small crystalhte size and anisotropic morphology) and were not of sufficient quality for ah initio structure solution. However, indexing the patterns did provide the crystal system (tetragonal) and approximate... [Pg.86]

Toxicologic research (Chapter 8) on the effects of ozone in laboratory animals has demonstrated that exposure to airborne ozone at less than 1 ppm for a few hours produces numerous changes in cell and organ structure and function. The lowest concentrations that produce these changes differ somewhat among different species of laboratory animals and with the effect under observation. However, several functional and morphologic indexes of response to ozone are altered with exposures to concentrations of about 0.2-0.5 ppm over periods ranging from a few minutes to several weeks. [Pg.7]

The studies of Tallin and Buehler indicate that microparticle spectroscopic techniques can be used to follow gas/microparticle chemical reactions. The use of morphological resonances to determine the refractive index of a reacting droplet has limited applicability because there must be a unique relationship between composition and refractive index to allow the method to be used to follow chemical reactions. Raman spectroscopy has broader applications, but one must deal with morphological resonances if droplets are... [Pg.87]
