Incremental processes

Another incremental process consists in the progressive flushing of a porous rock by a fluid. Solid-liquid exchange leads to chemical changes when more fluid is allowed to percolate, which is extremely efficient in producing strong elemental or isotopic fractionation.

Finally, incremental process improvements in the form of continuous, small-scale innovations add significantly to the productivity of mature nonassembled products. There, innovation is almost exclusively the province of the incumbent producers who are motivated chiefly by cost competition. When combined with the leaps forward made by the few radical innovations, productivity gains tend to follow the pattern shown in Fig. 7-3. In glass manufacture and similar industries, the productivity gains that accrue from these incremental changes and those from radical changes in process architecture appear about evenly divided (Utterback, 1994). The hydrogen experience would probably be close to that shown in Fig. 7-3. 

The solution to this problem has been to attach these catalysts to polymer supports. The ideal polymer-bound catalyst must satisfy a formidable list of requirements. It should be easily prepared from low cost materials. The support must be compatible with the solvent system employed, and be chemically and thermally stable under the reaction conditions. The catalyst should show minimal losses in reaction rate or selectivity when bound to the support, and should be able to be recycled many times without loss of activity. Finally, the interactions between the catalytic site and the support must be either negligible or beneficial. The development of polymer supported rhodium-phosphine catalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation of amino acid precursors illustrates the incremental process which has led to supports which approach the ideal support.

Incremental process model addresses the delivery gap. It produces the product in increments that implement the needed functionality in increments. Increments may be delivered to the customer as they are developed this is called evolutionary, or incremental, delivery. 

The cumulative effect of incremental process improvement is to cause the raw material costs to eventually become the dominant cost factor. This has already occurred with the oil refining industry and will take place in the biomass processing industries as these are established and grow to maturity. In this regard, biorefineries have a significant potential advantage over petroleum refineries because plant-based raw materials are abundant, widely available and inexpensive. The availability and prices of plant raw materials may thus be more stable and predictable than those of petroleum. As we have seen, plant raw material prices are already comparable on a cost per ton basis with petroleum and coal. Over time, petroleum prices must rise to reflect the fact that it is a nonrenewable resource, while there is the potential to keep biomass costs low indefinitely. 

The classifications are useful. In each category, we describe the likely impact on the supply chain from either new products or new processes. A "next-generation process" resulting from a B effort can happen even if there s not a great deal of change in the product itself. Likewise a nexf-generafion product may require only incremental process or supply chain changes. 

Given the history of urban renewal and the national controversy over eminent domain, any attempt to compel those last homeowners, such as the Detroit home-owner in the last occupied home on her desolate block who told a reporter I refuse to move unless the Lord says so (Hackney, 2009), is doomed to failure. While there are undoubtedly many owners who feel trapped in houses without the possibility of sale, and lack the money to move, helping them move is likely to be a slow, incremental process, hindered by the city s chronic shortage of financial resources. No salient research exists that might help cities better manage such strategies.
