Increased use

The increased use of composite materials in aireraft industry the last years has impliedagrowing need for efficient methods for nondestructive characterization of composite materials. One example is determination of porosity contents in composite specimens during manufacturing. Results have been reported [1], showing that the porosity contents can be estimated with good aceuracy by utilizing a linear relation between the frequeney dependenee of the attenuation, i.e., P = +1, where P is the porosity content, K and I are constants and where is the slope... [Pg.886]

Enzymes are important catalysts in biological organisms and are of increasing use in detergents and sensors. It is of interest to understand not only their adsorption characteristics but also their catalytic activity on the surface. The interplay between adsorption and deactivation has been clearly illustrated [119] as has the ability of a protein to cleave a surface-bound substrate [120]. [Pg.404]

While simulations reach into larger time spans, the inaccuracies of force fields become more apparent on the one hand properties based on free energies, which were never used for parametrization, are computed more accurately and discrepancies show up on the other hand longer simulations, particularly of proteins, show more subtle discrepancies that only appear after nanoseconds. Thus force fields are under constant revision as far as their parameters are concerned, and this process will continue. Unfortunately the form of the potentials is hardly considered and the refinement leads to an increasing number of distinct atom types with a proliferating number of parameters and a severe detoriation of transferability. The increased use of quantum mechanics to derive potentials will not really improve this situation ab initio quantum mechanics is not reliable enough on the level of kT, and on-the-fly use of quantum methods to derive forces, as in the Car-Parrinello method, is not likely to be applicable to very large systems in the foreseeable future. [Pg.8]

In discussing science we also need to define its scope, as well as the methods and views (concepts) involved in its pursuit. It is also useful to think about what science is not, although this can sometimes become controversial. Significant and important studies such as those concerned with the fields of sociology, politics, or economics increasingly use methods that previously were associated only with the physical and biological sciences or mathematics. However, I believe these... [Pg.4]

At the other extreme is a trend toward the increasing use of orbital-based techniques, particularly QM/MM calculations (Chapter 23). These orbital-based techniques are needed to accurately model the actual process of chemical bond breaking and formation. [Pg.296]

The greatest value of molecular dynamic simulations is that they complement and help to explain existing data for designing new experiments. The simulations are increasingly useful for structural refinement of models generated from NMR, distance geometry, and X-ray data. [Pg.10]

Both (i) and (ii) necessitate recourse to a model of pore shape. By far the commonest, chosen on grounds of simplicity, is the cylinder but the slit model is being increasingly used where the primary particles are plate-like, and the model where the pore is the cavity between touching spheres is beginning to receive attention. [Pg.134]

Polymers. The Tt-conjugated polymers used in semiconducting appHcations are usually insulating, with semiconducting or metallic properties induced by doping (see Flectrically conductive polymers). Most of the polymers of this type can be prepared by standard methods. The increasing use of polymers in devices in the last decade has led to a great deal of study to improve the processabiUty of thin films of commonly used polymers. [Pg.242]

Polyaniline (PANI) can be formed by electrochemical oxidation of aniline in aqueous acid, or by polymerization of aniline using an aqueous solution of ammonium thiosulfate and hydrochloric acid. This polymer is finding increasing use as a "transparent electrode" in semiconducting devices. To improve processibiHty, a large number of substituted polyanilines have been prepared. The sulfonated form of PANI is water soluble, and can be prepared by treatment of PANI with fuming sulfuric acid (31). A variety of other soluble substituted AJ-alkylsulfonic acid self-doped derivatives have been synthesized that possess moderate conductivity and allow facile preparation of spincoated thin films (32). [Pg.242]

Nondestmctive evaluation, also termed nondestmctive testing or nondestmctive inspection, is extensively used in weld testing (14). Nondestmctive tests do no impair the serviceabiUty of the material or component under stress. The most widely used tests for evaluation of welds are Hquid penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonics, and radiography. Acoustic-emission tests are increasingly used. Nondestmctive tests detect and characterize, in terms of size, shape, and location, the various types of weld discontinuities that can occur. [Pg.349]

Naturally occurring abrasives are still an important item of commerce, although synthetic abrasives now fill many of thek former uses. In 1987 about 156 million metric tons of natural abrasives were produced in the United States. Production was up from 1986 because of increased nonabrasive uses and increased use of garnet in sandblasting (4). [Pg.10]

Hydrophobe-modified copolymers of acrylate esters with acryflc or methacryflc acid are finding increasing use as high quality thickeners for both trade sales and industrial paints (186). Formulations thickened with these unique water-soluble polymers show excellent flow and leveling characteristics. [Pg.171]

The behavior of drops in the centrifugal field has been studied (211) and the residence times and mass-transfer rates have been measured (212). PodbieHiiak extractors have been widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, eg, for the extraction of penicillin, and are increasingly used in other fields as weU. Commercial units having throughputs of up to 98 m /h (26,000 gal/h) have been reported. [Pg.77]

The principle of fluorescent whitening was described in 1929 (1), but the industrial use of FWAs began about 10 years later. Since that time FWAs have found increasing use in the most diverse fields (2—5). The toxicological properties of fluorescent whiteners have been summarized (6). Commercial products investigated thus fat have been found to be completely harmless. Mote than 2000 patents for FWAs exist, there ate several hundred commercial products, and approximately one hundred producers and distributors. [Pg.114]

In conjunction with the increased use of synthetic fibers and blends of synthetic and natural fibers, and the modernisation of appHcation processes which has taken place simultaneously, the technique of textile whitening has been improved considerably. [Pg.119]

Natural gas upgra ding economics may be affected by additional factors. The increasing use of compressed natural gas (CNG) directiy as fuel in vehicles provides an alternative market which affects both gas price and value (see Gasoline and other motor fuels Gas, natural). The hostility of the remote site environment where the natural gas is located may contribute to additional costs, eg, offshore sites require platforms and submarine pipelines. [Pg.97]
