Centrifugal field

The final and less commonly dealt-with member of the family of electrokinetic phenomena is the sedimentation potential. If charged particles are caused to move relative to the medium as a result, say, of a gravitational or centrifugal field, there again will be an induced potential E. The formula relating to f and other parameters is [72, 77]... [Pg.188]

If a sedimentation experiment is carried out long enough, a state of equilibrium is eventually reached between sedimentation and diffusion. Under these conditions material will pass through a cross section perpendicular to the radius in both directions at equal rates downward owing to the centrifugal field, and upward owing to the concentration gradient. It is easy to write expressions for the two fluxes which describe this situation ... [Pg.639]

The behavior of drops in the centrifugal field has been studied (211) and the residence times and mass-transfer rates have been measured (212). PodbieHiiak extractors have been widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, eg, for the extraction of penicillin, and are increasingly used in other fields as weU. Commercial units having throughputs of up to 98 m /h (26,000 gal/h) have been reported. [Pg.77]

For cakes of high permeabihty, the capillary drain height may be an insignificant fraction of cake thickness, and film drainage becomes the controlling factor in a centrifugal field (7). Under unsteady-state conditions, equation 18 represents the drainable Liquid left in the cake as a function of the centrifugal filtration parameters ... [Pg.400]

Power, Energy, and Drives. Centrifuges accomplish their function by subjecting fluids and soHds to centrifugal fields produced by rotation. Electric motors are the drive device most frequently used however, hydrauHc motors, internal combustion engines, and steam or air turbines are also used. One power equation appHes to all types of centrifuges and drive devices. [Pg.403]

In 1981, a novel flotation device known as the air-sparged hydrocyclone, shown in Figure 3, was developed (16). In this equipment, a thin film and swid flotation is accompHshed in a centrifugal field, where air sparges through a porous wall. Because of the enhanced hydrodynamic condition, separation of fine hydrophobic particles can be readily accompHshed. Also, retention times can be reduced to a matter of seconds. Thus, this device provides up to 200 times the throughput of conventional flotation cells at similar yields and product quaHties. [Pg.255]

In pressure diffusion, a pressure gradient is estabUshed by gravity or in a centrifugal field. The lighter components tend to concentrate in the low pressure (center) portion of the fluid. Countercurrent flow and cascading extend the separation effect. [Pg.76]

Mechanical Centrifugal Separators A number of collectors in which the centrifugal field is supphed by a rotating member are commercially available. In the typical unit shown in Fig. 17-45, the exhauster or fan and dust collector are combined as a single unit. The blades are especially shaped to direct the separated dust into an annular slot leading to the collec tion hopper while the cleaned gas continues to the scroll. [Pg.1590]
