Incompatible wastes

Small lab-pack containers of hazardous waste if they are first placed in nonlealdug, larger containers. These containers must be Filled to capacity and surrounded by enough absorbent material to contain the liquid contents of the lab pack. The resultant container must then be placed in a larger container packed with absorbent material which will not react with, become decomposed by, or ignited by the contents of the inside containers. Incompatible wastes may not be packed and disposed of together in this manner.

Stations should be separated physically to prevent cross-contamination and should be arranged in order of decreasing contamination, preferably in a straight line. Separate flow patterns and stations should be provided to isolate workers from different contamination zones containing incompatible wastes. Entry and exit points should be conspicuously marked, and the entry to the CRZ from the exclusion zone should be separate from the entry to the exclusion zone from the CRZ. Dressing stations for entry to the CRZ should be separate from redressing areas for exit from the CRZ. Personnel who wish to enter clean areas of the decontamination facility, such as locker rooms, should be completely decontaminated.

Wastes of different types must be segregated for example, this includes not mixing waste oil or used fuel oil with other wastes be careful not to put incompatible wastes in the same container or put wastes in unwashed containers that previously stored incompatible wastes ...

Incompatible Waste (1) A hazardous waste unsuitable for placement within a specific portion of a landfill because it may cause containment material to corrode or decay or, when combined with other wastes, might produce heat, pressure, fire, explosion, violent reaction, toxic dusts, mists, fumes, or gases. (2) Hazardous wastes which, if mixed, would become more hazardous than either waste individually.

When mixed with other waste, at a hazardous waste facility, many hazardous wastes can produce harmful effects, which include heat, pressure, violent reaction, fire, explosion, or liberation of toxic or flammable fumes, gases, or mists. Table A2 presents examples of such incompatible materials. This is not an exhaustive list, but it highlights incompatible wastes. 

Incompatible wastes and materials must not be placed in the same pile unless separated or protected by means of a dike, wall, berm, or other device. A hazardous waste may be subjected to land disposal in compliance with RCRA regulations. The landfill must have a liner system to the adjacent subsurface soil or groundwater or surface water. 

Incompatible wastes must not be placed in the same outside container. 

Excess bromine and waste material containing this substance should be placed in an appropriate container, clearly labeled, and handled according to your institution s waste disposal guidelines. Store used wipes in closed containers that are labeled Excluded Solvent-Contaminated Wipes. EPA says that managing the wipes in nonleaking, closed containers ensures that the solvents are unlikely to be released into the environment. Further, closed and labeled containers serve to minimize emissions, prevent spills, and reduce the risk of fires, for example, by keeping the wipes away from potentially incompatible wastes or ignition sources.
