The marked decrease of the serum IgM in patients with Burkitt s lymphoma have been confirmed by Ziegler et al. (Zl) in East Africa, who noticed an impairment of the primary antibody response and low serum IgM levels in untreated patients with Burkitt s lymphoma, but not in patients in remission. They postulated a defect in humoral immunity possibly to impaired IgM synthesis. 

The treatment of a PID is based on the aspect of the immune system that is lacking. For those with dehcien-cies in humoral immunity, the only effective treatment available is antibody replacement (e.g., immune globulin) and medical management of infections. For those with dehciencies in cell-mediated immunity, there is no effective pharmacological treatment. 

The clinical manifestations of PIDs vary with the aspect of the immune system affected. In general, because of the role of antibodies in protection against bacterial infections, individuals with deficiencies in humoral immunity are particularly prone to infections from Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. These individuals are also prone to infections of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary tracts because of the protective role of IgA in secretions.

Lymphocytes comprise 15% to 40% of all WBCs and are of central importance to the immune system. Two functional types of lymphocytes are the T cell, which is involved in cell-mediated immunity, and the B cell, which produces antibodies involved in humoral immunity. Lymphocytosis frequently is associated with acute viral infections such as Epstein-Barr virus infection (mononucleosis) and cytomegalovirus in fection and rarely with unusual bacterial infections (i.e.. Brucella spp. infections).

Aboko-Cole and Lee (1974) found increased parasitemias in folate deficient rats infected with Trypanosoma lewisi. The deficient animals had increased parasite levels in their blood compared to control animals and remained infected for longer periods of time. The results of studies on immune status in a number of species point to defective cell mediated immune function and a possible reduction in humoral immunity as well.
