One more significant aspect of modem microscopy is the quantitative interpretation of the images in terms of the microstmcture of the object. Although most microscopes include or can be combined with powerful image processing systems, the interpretation of the contrast is still the main problem. On the other hand, reliable micromorpbological information could be easily obtained from a set of thin flat cross sections which reveal only density information, from which case accurate two- and three-dimensional numerical parameters of the internal microstmcture could be calculated. 

To date, the usual way of recording the LEED pattern is a light-sensitive video camera with a suitable image-processing system. In older systems movable Earaday cups (EC) were used which detected the electron current directly. Because of long data acquisition times and the problems of transferring motion into UHV, these systems are mostly out of use nowadays. 

Successful flow cytometric analysis depends on adequate sample preparation (see Chapters 30-31), appropriate selection of probes or markers (see Subheading 2.), instrumentation, and data display and analysis. Each of these areas is interrelated and requires adequate attention to avoid the introduction of artifacts and misinterpretation of results. Flow cytometers tend to be excessively complicated and require a skilled operator for alignment and calibration, though manufacturers are introducing more compact, user-friendly data acquisition and image processing systems.

The trend in the detection system employed is more towards automation. A CREAM video image processing system developed by Brogan and co-workers (78) enables one to evaluate and store ELISA data for further statistical manipulation. The CREAM EIA software gives an accurate estimation of sample concentration. It can also be used for quantitation of DOT-blots. 

We have discussed the fundamentals of medical imaging and have covered several matters including some definitions, image detectors and recorders, sources of medical images, and image processing systems.

For the estimation of Chi formation in hairy roots, the root cells were examined on a laser scanning confocal image system attached to a microscope. The filter package with a laser (excitation 568 nm) and a 590-610 nm band pass barrier filter for red fluorescence was employed. Digital image analysis was performed by a computer-aided image processing system with software.

The association processes between polymer latex particles were studied. Advantage was taken of latex particles being large enough to be seen under an ultramicroscope connected to an image-processing system. 

There are other ideas floating around, for example, use of neural network to describe and predict the behavior of the wet granulation or control the end-point by rapid image processing system.
