The capillary rise on a Wilhelmy plate (Section II-6C) is a nice means to obtain contact angles by measurement of the height, h, of the meniscus on a partially immersed plate (see Fig. 11-14) [111, 112]. Neumann has automated this technique to replace manual measurement of h with digital image analysis to obtain an accuracy of 0.06° (and a repeatability to 95%, in practice, of 0.01°) [108]. The results of image analysis of macroporous epoxies showing a narrow and bimodal pore size distribution are summarized in Table 3. The volume fraction, ( ), is always calculated from density measurements. The validity of the data obtained with digital image analysis is of utmost importance in order to draw correct conclusions concerning the structure-property relationships.

Low levels of LA are found in the sebum of acne sufferers,200 and levels appear inversely related to sebum secretion rate.201 It has been hypothesized that this local EFA deficiency may lead to the follicular hyperkeratosis and occlusion of acne, and that an increased supply of linoleate might possibly ameliorate the condition.202 In support of this, digital image analysis revealed that topical application of LA over a one month period reduced the size of microcomedones.203 Decreased levels of LA may also contribute to acne inflammation by failing to inhibit phagocytosis and ROS generation by neutrophils.204...

Digital image analysis will increase the number of usable dyes since it does not rely on the human eye for detection and differentiation. A digital image is acquired at excitation wavelengths relevant for the dyes applied, and separate detectors record individual colors. Thus, digital image analysis e.g. will allow the combination of fluorescent and immunoenzyme dyes.
