Horizontal rotary filter table

The horizontal rotary table filter incorporates, as its name suggests, a horizontal rotary circular table divided into segments or drainage compartments, each of which is ported to a rotary valve underneath the table. The top surface of the table is fitted with a filter medium and walls are provided around the periphery of the table and around the hub. Representative commercial sizes of some types of pressure filters for operation in batch modes are reported in Table 11.11. Some of these data are quite old, and not all of the equipment is currently popular thus manufacturers should be consulted for the latest information. Commercially available size ranges of continuous belt, rotary drum, rotary disk, and horizontal rotary filters are listed in Table 11.12. For the most part these devices operate with vacua of 500 Torr or less. 

An example of a horizontal rotary filter is illustrated in Figure 5. These machines are well suited to filtering quick-draining crystalline solids. Due to its horizontal surface, solids are prevented from falling off or from being washed off by the wash water. As such, an unusually heavy layer of solids can be tolerated. The basic design consists of a circular horizontal table that rotates about a center axis. The table is comprised of a number of hoDow pie-shaped segments with perforated or woven metal tops. Cycle times, air rates, and minimum cake thicknesses in operation of rotary drum filters are stated in Table 11.13. A few special applications of horizontal belt filters are given in Table 11.14, but in recent times this kind of equipment is taking over many of the traditional functions of rotary drum filters. Belt filters are favored particularly for fieely filtering slurries with wide range of particle sizes.

Unlike the multi-pan filter, which can have several feed and discharge points, the rotary table filter moves continuously from one feed point to one discharge zone. Both are being supplanted in industrial usage by the horizontal belt filter. 

The range of materials handled by rotary vacuum drum filters is shown in Table 3.3. For a long period the RVDF was the main process vacuum filter, a key processing tool in the various industries listed in Table 3.3, but its role has been taken to a considerable extent in recent years by the horizontal belt filter.
