One part by wt of the 3rd potency of a drug prepared by trituration in lactose medium is mixed with 50 parts by wt of distilled water and the mixture is shaken or stirred. Fifty parts by wt of ethanol are added to the aqueous mixture so as to fill the vial upto two-thirds of its space. The vial is stoppered and shaken by 10 downward strokes. This is the 4th centesimal potency of the drug. Subsequent potencies are prepared by mixing one part by volume of the 4th potency with 99 parts by volume of 90% ethanol and subjecting the mixture to 10 succussions. In case of a decimal potency one part by wt of 6 x trituration of a drug is mixed with 50 parts by wt of distilled water in a vial. Fifty parts by wt of ethanol are added to the mixture which is succussed 10 times. This is 8 x potency of the drug. One part by wt of this potency is mixed with 9 parts by wt of 90% ethanol and the mixture is succussed 10 times to produce the 9 x potency of the drug. All subsequent potencies in the decimal scale are prepared in this way. The methods used by pharmacists are described in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia (Anonymous, 1920, 1962). Monopreparations shall mean homeopathic medicinal products prepared from one stock in accor-dcuice with a homeopathic manufacturing procedure described by a homeopathic pharmacopoeia. 

To this end the manufacturer has to refer to the homeopathic pharmacopoeia that is used, where the manufacturing procedure has to be indicated. 

Echinacea is regulated as a dietary supplement in the United States (40). In homeopathy (see the discussion of this type of medicine in chapter 4), a dilute alcohol/water extract is used as a base for preparing other medicines. The Latin name for mistletoe is Viscum album. It is a semiparasitic plant that grows on old apple, ash, and hawthorn trees. It is one of very few cancer medications with a rich traditional history. Ancient Greeks used it as an anticancer medication, and it was a popular herbal medicine of the Druids, who used it for treating epilepsy and nervous system disorders. Dr. Rudolf Steiner, founder of the Society for Cancer Research, advocated its use in 1920 for the treatment of human cancer. " Presently, it is widely used in Europe and North America to treat arthritis and rheumatism and for palhative treatment of malignant tumors. Viscum album is listed in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States Mistletoe is marketed under the brand names Iscador, Isorel, Helixor, Eurixor, Vysorel, etc. 

Homeopathic herbal preparations. Homeopathic products are classified as over-the-counter or prescription drugs and are regulated under the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States. Safety concerns that arise for an herb in crude form may not apply to homeopathic preparations of the same herb, and this document does not address herbal products in homeopathic forms. Essential oils. Essential oils are concentrations of specific volatile compounds. While many essential oils have a well-documented history of safe use by appropriately skilled persons, they often present toxicological concerns that are absent or moderate in the crude plant materials from which the oil is derived. Except for a small number of essential oils that have a history of internal use, the classification of essential oils is beyond the scope of this document. 

In Europe the German Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia is available for the regulation of the quality of these medicines. If prescribed it usually is a licensed medicine but occasionally - mainly in cases of non-availability - a pharmacy... 

In the USA, products with anti-microbial claims are sold as over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. This may include cosmetics, with supplementary uses as infection inhibitors, or with healing and palliative (soothing) properties. In contrast to US pharmaceutical products, OTC products may not contain active agents listed in the US Pharmacopoeia, National Formulary or Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia.
