Cold-hammering was used in the late Stone Age to produce plates of gold for ornamental purposes, and this metal has always been synonymous with beauty, wealth and power. Considerable quantities were accumulated by ancient peoples. The coffin of Tutankhamun (a minor Pharaoh who was only 18 when he died) contained no less than 112 kg of gold, and the legendary Aztec and Inca hoards in Mexico and Peru were a major reason for the Spanish conquests of Central and South America in the early sixteenth century. Uses of Formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is the simplest and most reactive aldehyde. Condensation polymerization of formaldehyde with phenol, urea, or melamine produces phenol-formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde, and melamine formaldehyde resins, respectively. Other Covalent Radii. In Cu20 and Ag20 each metal atom is equidistant from two nearest oxygen atoms, the interatomic distances corresponding to the radius values 1.18 and 1.39 A for Cu1 and Agl with coordination number two. In KAg(GN)2, in which each silver atom is similarly attached to two cyanide groups1), the effective radius of Agl is 1.36 A. We learned later that crystals of the substance were also given by Professor Franklin to Dr. J. L. Hoard, who is continuing their study at Cornell University.
