Nicotinic receptors are widely distributed in the brain and are involved in a number of physiological processes. The prefrontal cortex is a major site for the cognitive effects of nicotine (Vidal 1996). Some of the cognitive benefits of nicotine may occur after chronic treatment, resulting in part from nicotinic receptor up-regulation in frontal, entorhinal, and dorsal hippocampal regions (Abdulla et al. 1996). Chronic nicotine treatment also increases the sensitivity of muscarinic receptors (Wang et al. 1996). 

The dorsal and ventral hippocampus is involved in the formation of social memory (van Wimersma Greidanus and Maigret, 1996). Neonatal ablations of hippocampal regions can lead to decreased and abnormal social behavior in rhesus monkeys that is reminiscent of severe neuropsychiatric disorders in humans such as autism and schizophrenia (Bachevalier et ah, 1999). These monkeys are often withdrawn socially and will develop locomotoric stereotypies a pattern similar to that found in autistic children.

The finding of abnormal cell growth stimulated by mood stabilizers is consistent with research showing that bipolar patients taking lithium and valproic acid have increased hippocampal regions measured on MRI. Beyer et al. (2004) found that this increase in hippocampal size correlated with the use of lithium. They also related it to the laboratory studies of neurogenesis. 

Abnormal recruitment of the hippocampus during memory retrieval in schizophrenia. The right hippocampal region indicated in red in (a) showed increased relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during high accuracy recall when compared with both lexical retrieval at baseline and low accuracy recall in healthy control subjects ("controls" in (b)). Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L-1 (UCH L-1), one of the components of the proteosomal pathway, was identified as an oxidized protein in the inferior parietal and hippocampal regions of AD, further suggesting a role for nitration in protein accumulation (Castegna et al., 2003 Sultana et al., 2006b). 

Hippocampal intrinsic afferents to the subiculum originate from other hippocampal regions. The CAl neurons send a dense projection to the subiculum and the CAS pyramidal cells project to all parts of the subicular complex through the Schaffer collateral pathway (Swanson et al., 1978). The extrahippocampal projections to the subiculum mainly originate from the raphe nuclei (Conrad et al., 1974), locus coeruleus...
