The monolayer culture technique is frequently employed in cytotoxicity tests with cancer lines and in studies of chemical sensitivity of different tumor types. This method offers high flexibility with respect to drug exposure and recuperation conditions, as well as to the quantification of any effect. The ability of PGA to inhibit the growth of ovarian cancer cells was examined in vitro, in the presence and absence of DON. The MAWS cell line is a primary ovarian cancer cell line established from a human patient. As documented in Table 6.2, this cell line is highly sensitive to PGA alone, even at low concentrations, but when PGA was combined with DON the growth inhibition was almost complete. Plakortides M and N, recently isolated from Plakortis halichondrioides harvested in Puerto Rico, are highly cytotoxic in vitro for several cancer lines, with an IC50 value that is often below 1 jxM (Jimenez, Garzon, and Rodriguez, 2003). [Pg.674]
